I guess they could but that would really make people crazy - take a team that did not win its conference but not the team that did? Also, how do you put Auburn in if it does not even win its division - unless the winner of the division is in?

Different system now, I know, but LSU v Alabama a few years ago was that very scenario. Also Nebraska got hammered one year and made the title game. It's possible then for the conference loser to make the Final Four.

I think we could all sit back and laugh at that. This board would implode.

 

I understand the hate toward the SEC, but facts are that 2 of the best 5-6 teams in the nation play there.....maybe more.

If MissSt makes it to the finals without a loss they're in even if they lose.

 

Bama will get in with 2 losses if the 2nd loss is to Auburn and it's not a blowout and Auburn wins the SEC championship game.

You may be right - we will see. Does a 2 loss Alabama get in if MSU/OSU winner has 1 loss, Oregon has 1 loss. TCU/KSU winner has 1 loss and FSU is undefeated and Auburn wins the SEC championship? So many possibilities and by the end of the year, most of this stuff will be sorted out anyway.

In your scenario I'd see FSU definitely in. Auburn definitely in. Bama in if they're not blown out by Auburn. Not sure on the 4th.

 

That would be a very interesting scenario.

I think the SEC disaster scenario would have to play out something like this (with varying elements of believability):

 

-Missouri loses one of these next three games. I guess the most damage would be done if they lost to the likes of Arkansas. This would not require Georgia to lose again to have Missouri make the SEC title game. [bONUS nightmare would be Mizzou loses TWICE and Georgia loses to Kentucky] This would leave Mizzou in the title game at just 9-3 (or 8-4 in the worse scenario) with probably their best win being a road victory at Florida.

 

-Georgia beats Auburn. Even if Georgia wins out and has that victory to boost them, they're too far back now to play themselves in and especially couldn't without making the title game.

-Mississippi State loses to BOTH Alabama and Ole Miss. Of all the scenarios this would be most likely. This would leave them at 10-2.

-Alabama loses to both LSU and Auburn. Plus the win over MSU they'd be 9-3 with three losses in-conference.

-A true nightmare would be Auburn losing to Texas A&M but that stretches believability too far. They win each game other than at Georgia to finish 10-2.

-Ole Miss wins out, making them 10-2.

-LSU wins out, making them 10-2.

 

This would leave MSU, Ole Miss, Auburn, and LSU all tied for the West Division championship at 6-2 in the SEC. The first tiebreaker in such a scenario is best head to head record among the tied teams. The provisions are that if teams are eliminated by applying that tiebreaker and leaving only two teams, it then moves to pure head to head. So MSU and Auburn would be the two that went 2-1 in that scenario, eliminating Ole Miss and LSU. Head to head would then advance MSU.

 

-Missouri beats Mississippi State in the SEC Championship.

 

*You'd be left with an SEC champion (Missouri) that is at best 10-3 and a loss to Indiana on their resume. They're out.

*You'd have the SEC runner-up (Mississippi State) that is also 10-3 with a loss to Missouri and losses in 3 of their last 4. They're out.

*Alabama would be 9-3 having lost 2 of their last 4. They're out.

*Georgia finishes at 10-2 but is likely too far back to make it. They didn't win their division and they have hideous losses. They're out.

 

That leaves LSU, Ole Miss, and Auburn. LSU is probably too far back to make it and Ole Miss is on thin ice, but a win over MSU might get them back in the conversation. It'd be close. But even in this scenario Auburn still might make it. A road win at Bama in the last week is a strong impression and road losses at MSU and Georgia aren't the worst in the world. Even in this scenario they could make it.

They have to play Duke. Imagine THAT chaos if Duke pulled that one out.

 

PP92 wouldn't be around to see it. His heart would have been torn in 2 in having to decide b/n his beloveds.

I like the playoff system and was hoping they'd finally go to it for many years. But I don't like the idea of a committee to choose the final 4. I wish they had kept the same system used in the BCS to choose the final 4. Now, I understand why they didn't do that, they could have ended up with as many as 3 SEC teams in the playoffs because computers wouldn't penalize the most difficult conference in the nation for beating up on one another. The goal should be to have the best 4 teams in the nation play in the playoffs, and a BCS computer system would have taken out the human bias elements that we'll probably have with a committee.

 

Regardless of how any kind of scenario play out, it would be totally ludicrous to shut the SEC completely out of the playoffs. If the computers were in control this year there would be no chance of that ever happening imo.
