LexCath nixes transfer agreement with Fayette County

Featured Replies

I was at that Catholic v Station game in Richmond. The more talented basketball team lost but not because of the officials. Station had 1 gear and 1 gear only. All they could do was run and press. it was very effective and they had personnel to do it well but when you only have a hammer everything looks like a nail, Catholic changed gears and Station didn't have any other tools in the toolbox. Champ got out-coached.

Curious why you think transfers into LexCath should have to be considered different then transfers out Joker, if Catholic has to sit them out for a year then they have to sit out a year after transferring away, that's why its the rule. The transfers into Catholic that you mentioned; Sanford, Seth Beckham, and Larry Morton all sat out the required year for transfers. As mentioned above Morton never played a minute for LexCath and had no problems getting eligible at Station. I'm sure sitting out years at Lexington Catholic hurt their athletic careers but that's the rule.

I don't even know what you're saying about Catholic protesting these other transfers so hard and causing them to miss years. That's the rule isn't it? Why is the rule different for kids leaving LC? Not only that but your basic facts on the cases you presented are wrong.

Jaylen Beckham- Transferred from LexCath over the summer before his senior year, he then attended St. Benedict's Prep in New Jersey, left St. Benedict's for Huntington Prep in WV, and then left for disciplinary reasons to attend Bryan Station. All those schools in 1 year. He sat out until January of his senior year as that was the time when he transferred back from Huntington Prep as a junior.

Rodney Haddix- Never even enrolled at Lexington Catholic. His situation has nothing to with the Knights. Long story short, he repeated his 8th grade year at a Catholic school in Georgetown. This made him ineligible for his senior season at Scott County. http://bluegrasspreps.com/ky-football-high/scott-countys-rodney-96744.html here's the thread about it.

Joe Harden- here's a link I found that details the situation nicely Former UK athlete sues board The part that's relevant to the situation "said Haney, who did not contest the transfer"

Larry Morton- Was never ineligible at Bryan Station. Sat out the one year he was at LexCath.

Only basketball transfer that I'm aware of for LexCath that had to sit out because of Catholic was Eric Trigg but this was after the agreement with the FPS. I do know that for LexCath football the couple transfers to the program since I've been here that played varsity (only 2) had to sit out the year. I do know of a three situations where kids left LC's football program and were eligible after playing varsity.

Joker, don't get me wrong I love your posts but you'll need to use examples that are actually true if you're going to paint LexCath as some school that is vindictive against transfers away from the school. They actually seem to be the opposite from the facts I've presented and from what I personally know they are the opposite.

Jaylen Beckham:

And I'm sure Catholic didn't mind his having to sit out once he came back to Kentucky in the least. He had a pretty raw deal with one of the schools he wound up at.

Joe Harden:

I think it's fair to say that when a kid leaves one school for another, it's fairly easy for the school they've departed to help expedite the process. The fact that he had to file an appeal and jump through all types of hoops. The article you linked also had this quote, "An unsigned memo submitted with the KHSAA's July 12 response alleges that “Roger has been shopping this kid since early June. ... I guess he's trying to find a school where he can start.”

Rodney Haddix:

Saying he never enrolled in Lexington Catholic High School is true, but I also remember him playing middle school basketball with Lexington Catholic's Middle School team, so I think it's a stretch to say his sitatuion "had nothing to do with the Knights".

Agree that kids sitting out a year, regardless of which way they transferred, was fair under the rule if it was applied equally to both teams.

Lexington Catholic doesn't have a middle school so their middle school team consists of many different kids from many different schools. Marcellous Washington played middle school ball for Lexington Catholic's teams and he spent all four years of high school at Bryan Station. I know he's one of quite a few who played on LexCath middle school teams that didn't end up at LexCath for high school.

You heard the game, I saw it, I have no problem with opinions on here. However when facts are grossly distorted, (5 technicals, and by your account Ligon and Combs would have been ejected getting 2 each) I really struggle to take anything seriously, one of the big drawbacks to online forums is that anyone can post anything, true or not

Does*nt the same thing go on at Sayre?? Oh I forgot, they don*t win alot.....

I know it was in Richmond, but I'm unsure of what that has to do with anything. I've seen Catholic get calls against Tates Creek (Fucci and Barkesdale years) in the 'Dores own gym.

I will agree that the more talented team lost.

Geez, sorry, I guess I confused the 2 technicals on Scott County in the 4th Quarter of that year's semifinal game, one when the score was 54-50 at the time before that helped end it in a blowout, and the one technical on Combs, along with something else from 6 years ago. Like I said, my apologies, I was wrong.

I don't care to admit when I'm wrong and was wrong about the 5 T's. I still think people are wrong saying the win was "with no help from the officials"... and think we could probably agree that the officials didn't hurt them.

Have heard too much from too many people who know the game to agree there. If nothing else, you'd probably have to agree, at the very least, that even assuming that the refs called things evenly, that they called in a way that everyone would have assumed would have been highly disadvantegous to Station going in.

I think the fact that I even believed it was plausible that Station recieved 5 technicals should be indicative of what's been said about the game on it's own.

Huge fan of the 11th, but I still think Hundley went over the back against Tilghman in '99 and that Catholic screwed Station in '08.

They don't have a middle school, but I think it's safe to assume they had plans for an 8th grade Rodney Haddix, who played in their middle school program, to be a part of their team. He was a big part of their run at the state middle school tournament one year, IIRC.

I'll be the first to agree that there are kids who play MS at Lexington Catholic but don't wind up playing high school there too.

wow, admit your wrong, but give a 500 word response full of excuses......

Thanks. I guess I have a way with words, same as people talking about how the Publics are cowards for possibly not scheduling Lex Cath after they backed out of an agreement the two had come to, people saying that Lex Cath would never protest a transfer who wanted to leave, Lexington Catholic hasn't benefitted from friendly whistles a few times, what have you.

Since I'm so wordy, I'll also reiterate what I've already said: Catholic's a great school. Solid program. They play hard, they're disciplined. Basketball purists can appreciate their system and what they do. They've accomplished lots. I can see why people would want to send their kids there. I hope that people who choose to send their kids there get to see them eligible.

I'll even add that they run one of the best tournaments in Kentucky during the holidays, that I hope to go to some of it, and that an "up" Lexington Catholic usually coincides with a strong 11th.

One of the worst calls I've ever seen in a game. But Tilghman also had several more terrible calls leading up to that one that allowed Scott County to get back in the game. The official that made all the calls that hurt Tilghman was a Harlan Countian, same county Scott County's Billy Hicks hails from. That probably shaded his decision making quite a bit. The Rupp fans wern't very happy about it. They stood and booed for probably 15 to 20 minutes after the game was over.

The only other game I can remember that was as badly officiated was the 1986 state semi-final Hazard-PRP fiasco. That game was highway robbery at its best, and more than likely cost Hazard a state championship. And the post game crowd reaction was worse than the Paducah Tilghman-Scott County 1999 game. The fans screamed, booed, and threw things on the floor for 30 minutes following the game.

Knights, Eric Trigg had to sit out due to the KHSAA ruling him ineligible since he didnt move. If they handn't, then the agreement would have gotten him so its really one way or another. :)

just looking @ the numbers from the last 6 years

Lexington Catholic vs. the 5 city schools 2009-2014

Boys Basketball 25-11

Girls Basketball 19-15

Boys Soccer 11-15-2

Girls Soccer 24-6-2

Volleyball 3-25

Baseball 30-11

Softball 15-22

Football 4-2

Football is 45-19 since 2009 for a .703 winning percentage to date. Their winning percentage over the last 17 years of available info on KHSAA scoreboard was .701, only major difference? the two state titles they won in 2005 & 2007. I am sure that the overall winning percentage would be much higher over the 17 year span but there were also 20 forfeits included into the stats.

LCA vs. the 5 city schools 2009-2014

Boys Basketball 12-23

Girls Basketball 11-21

Boys Soccer 5-20

Girls Soccer 16-14

Volleyball 5-34

Baseball 31-31

Softball 4-33

Football, no head to head games against FCPS teams, they have played in F/JV games, BUT since their 2009 championship season going 14-1, they are a combined 28-31 to date over the last 5 seasons.

Looks like contract or not, Lex Catholic and LCA are somewhat successful in all facet.

I don't think people would really argue otherwise, especially if LCA is able to sustain some of the momentum they have. This year will be huge for them.

They have the resources to do things like be the school that Cal picks for his son, are able to get Doron Lamb to come out for a pep rally, hire Nathan Valentine, etc. They're goals have probably changed drastically over the past bit, but I think we're starting to see an LCA that is far less tepid about going against some of the bigger programs in the 11th.
