What a game. Congrats Cardinals

That was too close for comfort!

Nothing came easy for the Cardinals tonight as they had to earn everything they got.. The Panthers came to play for sure.. Russellville took the early lead in the 1st qtr on a touchdown and 2 point conversion.. Mayfield managed a late 2nd qtr field goal to cut the lead to 8-3 at the half.. After trading a couple of punts, Mayfield finally got there 1st touchdown late in the 3rd qtr and failed on the 2 point conversion, making the score 9-8.. After a couple more trading punts, Mayfield got a big break as Russellville fumbled the ball deep in there own territory and the Cards took it from 26 yds out and added the extra point making it 16-8 Mayfield with about 5 minutes left.. Russellville started the next drive at there own 24 yd line and drove it all the way to Mayfields 14 yd line, where the Cards D stepped up and got a stop on a 4th and 9 from the 14.. They then took a couple of knees and ran out the clock, giving you the final score..

 

Great effort by both teams and I'll be shocked if these 2 don't see each other again in the regional finals, at Mayfield..

Hopefully the passing game will improve soon. It seems to me we're kinda one dimensional right now. Hard fought win tonight, congrats Cards!

Reminds me of the cardinals of the 70's. Way to one demensioal.losing the offensive coordinator is really showing up right now. We are so predictable. I'll take it, but not very good offensively right now.

Only so much you can do with a 5'5 140 lb QB. Heart only takes you so far.

Actually the fumble by Russ was the Cards first score followed by the Bright long run but for all intensive purposes it makes no difference in the end

 

 

Russ was flat out faster causing all kinds of issues, most notably in the first quarter and early second. From that point the defense played pretty well other than a couple of dump penalties and a couple of nice passes. No more long runs anyway.

 

When Mf was on offense the Russ defense used their speed and stunts to really disrupt the offense, especially the passing game which looked more like the 2011 offense than recent years.

Hats off to Russ, they played a heck of a game and certainly good enough to win it. In my opinion they also played with a lot more urgency and with more heart pouring everything they had in to it. I suspect we will see them again in a few weeks and we will have to see if we learned anything from this one. This is the first time this year that we looked like a young inexperienced team and we struggled to find answers. If we don't learn from this we will not be in BG. This is surprising given our play to this point and to think that I had been unimpressed with their line play prior to tonight.

That offense from the 70's has won Mayfield more than one state championship including my senior year, with an 8-1 record and the only loss coming by way of a double overtime 2pt conversion id say the cards are primed for another run, Caldwell will tell a lot and without having seen the Russellville film yet I still pick Mayfield in a close one, Caldwell did good against the run against Murray but stacked the box, won't be able to do that next week

Still dealing with some of the same issues that date back to Milan and some of the earlier weeks. Thought they might have ironed these things out over the last month. Russellville is banging on the door, and will likely have one final chance to knock it down in a few weeks.

Saw Russellville at camp at Campbellsville University this summer, having not seen the game but unless something has changed I don't think they will be disciplined enough when push comes to shove in the playoffs, Judging by your picture a member of my family has been sitting by you for years, wish you luck the rest of the way

TP, I agree with everything but this. I really think we played similar to this against both Murray and Graves Co.. Which does make sense considering they are good defensive teams. I do feel that if our offense continues to struggle, the defense will keep us in games late in the playoffs.

This tells us some things.

 

We can win when we don't play are best game.

 

Mayfield has a strong defense.

 

Russellville is better than we thought.

 

We need to get a consistent passing game to keep teams from loading the box because even though our defense plays good we might not be able to score enough.

 

Mayfield is a still a very young team.

 

When we face Russellville again , they won't score more than 1 td and will have trouble stopping us.

Good win for the Cards, sometimes you need a game like this to truly test the younger kids on the team, helps galvanize them for the long run ahead. Good luck in the playoffs, hope to see you all in NKY in late November.
