October 9, 201411 yr Had a really good meal at the Fat Hen on Johns Island (outside Charleston, SC) this weekend. Shrimp and crab over Hoppin John. I love Low Country fare. Actually I love everything about the Low Country.
October 9, 201411 yr Never was a fan of grits until I had them in Charleston, completely different that what you get in other parts of the country. You then may want to check out this site: Products - Food for the Southern Soul. Great, authentic grits and other Low Country items. Food For the Southern Soul is owned by Jimmy Hagood, the brother of a dear friend of mine. The Hagoods are from Charleston and the family has lived in Charleston for generations. Great folks.
October 9, 201411 yr Have always been a fan of the Kentucky Bourbon Filet at Montana Grill in Bowling Green. Had really looked forward to having one this weekend for my birthday, but bummed to find out they've had a fire and are temporarily closed. :arghh:
October 9, 201411 yr I have favorites at each of my favorite restaurant. There's no overriding favorite though. I like food. Period.
October 9, 201411 yr I'm from Charleston, SC...Mt. Pleasant more specifically. The food in the low country is the best there is, but you don't know it until you leave . Grits at RBs are phenomenal. Scallps at Sullivans Island Bar and Grill-amazing. The best cake I've ever had is actually from a bakery by the market downtown called Kaminsky's. It's a fruit tort cake and it can't be replicated. I've tried. Sometimes we will make frogmore stew or what some people call a low country broil. Sausage, crab legs, corn on the cob, shrimp, new potatoes in a special seasoning/spice broth. Unreal.

October 9, 201411 yr White Castles. I can do that! :lol2: And now that I live in the middle of nowhere, I appreciate them even more than I did when I lived in Louisville. Driving 45 minutes to get some sliders is a serious crave.
October 9, 201411 yr *puke* Worst smells ever. :lol2: White Castle was one of our Trinity post-game spots back in the day.
October 9, 201411 yr :lol2: White Castle was one of our Trinity post-game spots back in the day. And as much of a foodie as I am, I think my love of White Castles proves I'm not a food snob.

That entire area is great and packed with great restaurants and fresh seafood. My parents had a timeshare at Folly Island for a while, one of the best meals I've ever cooked myself came from fresh seafood from Crosbys. There are so many great restaurants in that area and Savannah that it makes it nearly impossible for me to pick a favorite meal.
October 9, 201411 yr Last week, I had 3 amazing meals a day at The Hotel Hershey. We flew private from Bloomington, IN. So, driving back to KY after landing around lunchtime on Friday, I needed to get a bite to eat on the way home. I wound up having Speedway pizza. Not bad...but I sure felt like I'd fallen from grace. :lol2: Speaking of amazing restaurant food, if you ever get a chance to eat at Circular at The Hershey Hotel, have the Virginia Ham with Cabot cheddar croquettes....TO.DIE.FOR.
October 9, 201411 yr Many years ago, I was visiting an old college roommate in Houston, and he took me to a Cajun place called Pappdeaux. It started out as a local chain in that area (the Pappas group also does a number of other styles of restaurants, such as Mexican and steakhouses) and was just beginning to expand to Texas' other major cities. Anyway, I had a fantastic dish called the Pontchartrain — pan-seared redfish encrusted with crab and shrimp with a buttery red wine sauce over dirty rice — and some gumbo. That pretty much kick-started my deep love of Cajun/Creole/Louisiana-style foods. That sounds spectacular. I often make jambalaya and gumbo, but not nearly as good as the pros.
October 9, 201411 yr Chateaubriand for two at El Greco's Restaurant owned by the Bernstiein Family in Southgate . It is our parish's parking lot now . The Dinner Bell's Fish setup dinner . Both were out of this world . Both are defunct now .
