October 3, 201412 yr Or the redneck freckled face kids in tattered bibs with an accent so thick you could cut it? Is it really racist if it's a parody for all races? Not a true parody of all races, but certainly a parody of the South, the inhabitants of which are still a caricature to a lot of people across the country and the world.
October 3, 201412 yr The old cartoons were very stereotypical now that I look back on them but when I was a kid, they were just funny talking crows to me! The woman in the Tom and Jerry cartoons - I just thought Tom was her cat; I never had racist thoughts about her and it never crossed my mind that I should think any different of her. Just examples of the innocence of youth and proof that racism is a learned behavior; you are not born that way. Absolutely. My favorite Disney movie when I was really young (think preschool) was Dumbo. There's an old home movie of me probably still hanging around somewhere of me singing that crow song. "Well I been done seen 'bout everything When I seen a elephant fly."

October 3, 201412 yr ..... I watched an episode of "All in the Family" a while back, one of my all-time favorites, and counted 5 lines that would NEVER fly today. I don't necessarily think it is a bad thing, and I know many think we have gone too far (however, every single person I've ever heard say "this country has gone too far with the PC nonsense" is white and Christian), but it was weird hearing some of those lines and references on TV. I still love that show -- just to be clear. I will watch old episodes all the time of All in the Family. I love it and is still one of the smartest and funniest sitcoms ever written I think especially in the time it was made. I agree, each episode has about a half a dozen things said that wouldn't be tolerated today, but I think it was very important for the show. The prejudice that was displayed on that show wasn't just for comic relief but for some very important social lessons that were going on at that time in this country. There is a difference in bigotry just to be a bigot and a way to display it to show what is right and wrong and All in the Family was huge in crossing many lines and to show how truly ignorant some beliefs were in this country in the 70's. Archie Bunker will always go down as one of the all time great TV characters. I put him and Barney Fife as my all time favorite sitcom characters.
October 3, 201412 yr And I don't see how that makes it less offensive. It doesn't. It's a product created by white coastal elites that caricatures and pokes fun at quite probably everyone else on the planet.

October 3, 201412 yr Heckle and Jeckle was a favorite cartoon growing up. Am I racist? I just thought they were two funny birds (magpies). My Gosh, and this is just my opinion, folks will find racism in everything. I don’t care who you are. At some point we’ve got to move on or we’ll just stand around pointing fingers and never move forward. Edited October 3, 201412 yr by OlDog75
October 3, 201412 yr I think people need to pump the brakes with throwing out the racist term. There is a difference in something having a racial component about it and actually being racist. A lot, especially the PC police, cannot and refuse to separate the two.
