Lol. That happens to you too, Jim? I do agree on your take on Kentucky fans cheering for the SEC in football. Seems there are a lot of Alabama fans among the ranks and I don't understand why. Can you imagine other SEC fans cheering as passionately for UK in basketball?

If you didn't go to the school, I'd think it's safe to say you could be a fan of different teams from different schools pretty easily.

 

As far as rooting for your Conference opponents, don't most of us root for any Kentucky High School when they play an out of state school, even though we may root against them when playing Kentucky Schools. I'm hardly ever for the Big3 (T,X, HHS) when they play another team in the state but I'm for them against all out of state competition. Is that any different than rooting for your conference opponents when they play out of conference teams?

What is more disturbing? UK fan's obsessive nature and their misguided rooting tendencies, or Jim Schue's obsession with UK fans and their whacky ways?

The SEC chant has taken place so much since they have won so much. Makes perfect sense. I can't evaluate if that's dumb or not but apparently it is in many circles.

Come tournament time in basketball you will find a lot of Sec teams rooting in other Sec teams to show how good their conference is in their minds compared to other conferences and it happens the same way with other fans of other schools in other conferences too.

 

To think it doesn't happen as you say is simply not true.

 

I know it happens and I'm not saying I don't do it either on occasion. But most take it overboard with their infatuation with Alabama football.

Someone I work with, an Ohio State fan, asked which college team I rooted for, I told him any SEC team. I'm not a huge college football fan but I'll watch at times when I have tine, and I'll root got any SEC team. I'm a huge UK basketball fan, but I'll also root for SEC teams in most games. As well as root for anyone who is playing tOSU.

 

I've been to plenary of NCAA basketball tourney games (UK), and have seen a lot of fans from other SEC teams rooting for UK.

 

I agree with your point on KY teams playing out of state teams. Same goes for regional teams. Come tourney time, in any sport, I'll cheer for the local teams, unless I have some connection with the other team.

 

Not sure why some are do up on hating people/things/teams. Never read isn't definition of "fan" that says you must hate your rivals at all costs. Not my way

How many times has your team played T, X or Highlands? There is no built in passion either way outside of simply pulling for any and every underdog in the state that happens to be on their schedule. They are nothing like a conference foe in college for you and almost all of the state on a year to year basis, and even more-so now that X and T have to go out of state to even be able to schedule 10 games. Apples and anchovies...

I think the issue Jim and many others have is that the only reason most UK fans pull the "SEC" card is to further advance the built in excuse for the Kentucky football program being awful for most of its existence.

From my 10 years off and on this site I seem to recall you root for Michigan, UC , and Marshall.

 

I root for Kentucky in basketball and Notre Dame in football. I honestly don't know a single person who roots for Bama and is also a UK fan. Sure SEC football fans drive me crazy but it happens in every conference . The SEC has just been the best for a long time so the voice is heard louder. If the SEC wasn't winning the chants would go away.
