It doesn't bother me that Missouri lost to IU, it gives me hope for another win for UK instead.

From my 10 years off and on this site I seem to recall you root for Michigan, UC , and Marshall.

 

I root for Kentucky in basketball and Notre Dame in football. I honestly don't know a single person who roots for Bama and is also a UK fan. Sure SEC football fans drive me crazy but it happens in every conference . The SEC has just been the best for a long time so the voice is heard louder. If the SEC wasn't winning the chants would go away.

 

Grew up a UC basketball fan as a result of going to games with my dad from a young age. Didn't really convert on the football side until I started working the UC beat 9 years ago, and that was more from being around the program and getting to know the players on a more personal level more than anything. My tie to Marshall was similar as that is where my broadcasting/journalism career started, but that has faded as the years have passed and all of my ties to the program have moved on.

 

Loved Michigan football as a kid and was a total mark for the Fab 5. I swore them off when they hired Rich Rod and haven't sat down to watch a full game since. I do still follow the basketball program because I love watching Beilein teams play. That's more of a hoops junkie thing than it is rooting for Michigan at this point.

 

The only conference tie I ever had was to the Big East, and that was where my love for basketball started as a little kid. It was must watch TV for me any time it was on in the late 80s and early 90s. I legit sat at my desk and shed some tears when it came to an end at MSG a year and a half ago. Still miss it, and hate the new league gets to use the name...

Why not root for the SEC if you are a UK fan. Especially in Basketball. While UK should normally not be on the NCAA tournament bubble, in years that they are if the SEC is perceived to be better than another conference in comparison than they have a better chance of making the tournament field. Furthermore, even in years when they are clearly in the tournament field the perception of the SEC may influence what type of seed or region they get placed in. Same will be true for football now that there is a playoff, even more so as the number of the teams in the playoff inevitably increases.

 

I don't get why you wouldn't want another conference team to win when playing out of conference. Say Tennessee gets beat by Wake Forest? Than what would it matter if UK beats them. I'd rather root on Tennessee to beat somebody like Oregon and than if UK can beat them it actually means something.

Agreed! Many of the same people saying you should not root for the other teams in your conference would be the same ones strutting their feathers on how many teams from their conference gets into the NCAA Bball tourney, and at the same time mention other teams that are in a "weak" conference.

If it's 2 SEC teams playing each other I couldn't give a crap who wins, I want the loser to benifit UK though. If an SEC team is playing an OOC game I don't get why it's wrong to hope they win? I want the SEC teams to do well because if UK beats them it makes UK look better. There is nothing wrong for cheering for SEC teams, the only people against it are the people who aren't in the SEC. I had a conversation with a die hard Bama fan, he basically said he wanted Auburn to lose every single SEC game they played, but if they were playing an OOC, while he didn't openly root for them, he wanted them to do well so when Bama would beat them it would bolster their résumé.
