I haven't followed this showcase. Did Cal say it's the only time scouts can come to watch his guys?

They were told this event was their shot. Practices will be closed to them for the foreseeable future.

He said they were going to be present all weekend then he was going to have closed practices for a few weeks.

He also said that he got several calls from teams stating that they couldn't make it & wanted to make sure they'd be allowed to come by during the season.

The way I understand it, it was the only time NBA guys will be allowed in until the season starts...

And during the season NBA guys typically only show up for games because they have one to attend 6 nights a week...

He said he hopes to keep them out for 2-3 weeks. Also said that he would probably allow a couple in during that span who called ahead and said they could not make it.

All great talking points, but none with any relevance.

Just call a spade a spade. It was a recruiting tool used by Cal to project a different strength now that the roster is full of potential NBA guys. Reality is those same 90 NBA guys would have been through over the next month and present no distraction other than sitting court-side for practice.

Cal created an event, got it on TV and in the process once again stayed ahead of the curve. Let's just quit pretending it was anything other than a recruiting ploy to create another advantage for Cal and the program...

Everything he does is for recruiting. He'll say it's always for his current guys, but in reality it's always for his next crop. No matter what he says and that's okay. I do believe that he wants to help his current guys reach their dreams, but that is just as much because he wants other young talent to see him do that for them and think, "He can do that for me too."

But I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.

So you think having a few NBA guys sitting court-side for practice like is done everywhere else is a distraction? What about it do you see as an advantage over how things are done everywhere else from a team perspective???

Would it help with getting some of the younger players used to the media frenzy? I know that they had that some during the Bahamas trip, but this probably helped some with that too. Just throwing a random idea out there.

He said on TV 3 or 4 weeks.

He said on TV 3 or 4 weeks.

Which is when both the College games start...and the NBA games start.

I don't think there was any harm to it, I'm not sure the need to defend every breath he takes with such gusto. I'm simply saying, again, this wasn't some revolutionary idea, it was a way to get on the front page, and he is better at that than anyone (which isn't a bad thing!!). It neither got them more NBA eyeballs (as all of those guys would have filtered through over the next few weeks anyway), nor did it do anything to harm anyone. It just isn't the "this is why Cal is the best" material that it was painted as. He keeps UK on the front page nationally (good), he gets great players (good), and he does right by them with the Association (good), all of which are positives.

Dude should wear a pied piper costume on 10/31....and every other day of the year.

Except, you know, their job is to scout the best college players, UK has a bunch, and due to The Maestro's theatrics, they did have to come.

He is in a class by himself when it cones to Marketing / PR and he most assuredly does well by his players. All good.

I'm just not sure that most understand that there are NBA scouts at virtually every high level program's practices already.

No gusto, just pointing out that he said it was for a few weeks not the Foreseeable Future which sounds like several months or longer...sorry I made a distinction in the two.

I'm not sure what point you guys are trying too make.

Everyone agrees that it was good for recruiting, everyone agrees that the scouts will have other opportunities to evaluate the players in games and later practices, everyone agree that Cal could sell snow to Eskimos, there is no Down Side to putting this on for the current players.

All of those that showed up would have been in at some time during the month of October to take in practice and see the same things they saw at the "Combine".

In that light, the only person this 100% made life easier for is Cal... :sssh:

How so? Is it a distraction for Cal if scouts are sitting on the sidelines during practice...Many have said scouts were not a distraction at regular practices for the players, so how does this make it easier for Cal?

I imagine it will make recruiting a lot easier lol.

Scouts will generally spend time with the coach before and after practice to pick his brain on the NBA level prospects...
