Kentucky's NBA Scouting Combine

Featured Replies

I am constantly amazed at how bad offensively WCS is. Zero improvement on footwork. Can someone teach the cat a jump hook, please?

He doesn't seem to have the drive to be great. Probably has something to do with it.

What makes you think this?

WCS wants to win just as much as the next guy. But he is never going to be an emotional leader for this team. He seems reserved in my contact with him. Dude is a great player, and will contribute huge minutes, but he is not a MGK, Patrick Patterson, etc.. (from a leaders perspective)

Now this I can agree with.

.....

This is such spin. So instead of them having 6-10 NBA scouts at nearly every practice, he only is allowing them at this one practice so they have no choice but to all show up. Talked to an NBA scout at a practice of an area D1 program last week, one of 7 in the gym, and he just laughed when I asked him about it. I don't get the sense the NBA guys love it, and it doesn't actually increase the kids' exposure, but man, Cal is the absolute best PR / Marketing man in the business.

He literally could spread feces on Lexington sidewalks and "BBN" would call him a Street Artist.

I was just going to post something like this but less eloquent. I was just going to ask, "why this is a big deal?" :lol2:

I mean, aren't all these guys going to be seen by scouts and have their games dissected to a tee by the end of the year anyways? Is UK playing in Russia or something this season?

I think it was a 3 day event not just one practice and Cal even said they would be welcome back later. He said he wanted a few weeks practice without any distractions. Nobody held a gun to any ones head and made them come. If they didn't like what he was selling they could have spent the weekend somewhere else.

I actually watched about 60% of the program tonight.

According to Bilas, there were 90 scouts there.

Cal said that the NBA personnel was going to stay with them for the combine (which was televised) & the next day's doubleheader practice, and maybe the Sunday practice. After that, he wanted the practices to be closed for several weeks so they could focus on the team.

He also said it's another opportunity to show his team that he's doing everything he can to get them to the next level. When you have 10+ guys worthy of PT & capable of playing in the league, you have to figure out other ways to get them exposure because some of them aren't going to be playing 30-40 minutes.

All great talking points, but none with any relevance.

Just call a spade a spade. It was a recruiting tool used by Cal to project a different strength now that the roster is full of potential NBA guys. Reality is those same 90 NBA guys would have been through over the next month and present no distraction other than sitting court-side for practice.

Cal created an event, got it on TV and in the process once again stayed ahead of the curve. Let's just quit pretending it was anything other than a recruiting ploy to create another advantage for Cal and the program...

I agree it was a recruiting ploy, but I do also think that he thinks it's good for his team as well.

So you think having a few NBA guys sitting court-side for practice like is done everywhere else is a distraction? What about it do you see as an advantage over how things are done everywhere else from a team perspective???

Nobody held a gun to any ones head and made them come.

Except, you know, their job is to scout the best college players, UK has a bunch, and due to The Maestro's theatrics, they did have to come.

He is in a class by himself when it cones to Marketing / PR and he most assuredly does well by his players. All good.

I'm just not sure that most understand that there are NBA scouts at virtually every high level program's practices already.

I don't know if it is a distraction or not.

A perceived advantage would be if any players were worried in the back of their head that they would get enough minutes to show case what they can do. Now they got 3 days to show what they can do, now they can get back to just playing and not worrying about minutes and shots.

It could help a players mindset and put them at ease.

But as PP said they'll be dissected inside and out during the season and in later practices...so they didn't have to come. NBA only came because they perceived there was a value to coming.

All of those that showed up would have been in at some time during the month of October to take in practice and see the same things they saw at the "Combine".

In that light, the only person this 100% made life easier for is Cal... :sssh:
