I talked to my niece last night who played volleyball at Notre Dame and she said it is not a rule that you can't cheer during a serve and it is also not frowned upon. She said that the St. Henry guys used to chant downright awful things at them while they were serving! LOL

 

What happened at this game is that the football team ended practice around the time the volleyball game was starting so they came in to support the girls. When you get a bunch of guys together, it's going to be loud in a small gym but nothing was out of line except maybe the "push it" cheer which I hear all the time during basketball season.

"Push It...." Ahhhhh....I get it....supposed to be "BULLS***" Funny...heard that several times last night but no idea what it meant. I thought they were telling the girls to "push harder" or something.

 

Last night was a great atmosphere at NDA. Both teams played hard, both teams had student sections, it was grade school night so there were a ton of little girls in attendance and I am sure they loved the "Big Game" feel. Of course, NDA won handedly and Highlands did not which is really why the facebook mom was mad, it HHS had beaten Brossart this would be a non issue.

 

Unless, of course, said FB Mom's princess didn't get to play enough but then her phone call would have been to HHS AD instead of BB.

Well, the hammer came down on Brossart students yesterday as a result of this "out of hand" game. For the record, I have talked to numerous parents and students who attended this game and not one person has said that any of what the FB poster said is true. For me, it comes down to sour grapes that Brossart won this series, and this is coming from a Highlands supporter. Attached are the new guidelines for cheering at Brossart sporting events. Nothing like sucking the fun out of high school.

IMO this is an overreaction from a new administration at BBHS (AD and Principal). I was there and this did not need to happen. Volleyball FINALLY gets some support and they KILL it. This is not fair to the students of BBHS again IMO. I hope this makes the HHS “super Mom” happy, but guess what, you still lost and I could not be happier.

If The principal was at the game as stated early then he must have seen something that required him

to write these rules. I'm not sure who everyone in this thread has talked to but I ask a few people who were at this game just for my own knowledge. I heard comments like "the most ridiculous thing I've every seen in my life." "Bishop Brossart should be ashamed that they allow their students to act like that".

 

As for making noise when you are serving, there is no rule that you have to be quiet. However to use your

basketball and football analogy from what I heard it would be comparable to someone running across the court behind the shooter and yelling as he went by, someone flopping around like a fish next to the holder while the kicker was trying to kick a field goal, or group of student going to stand on the sidelines with the opposing team while the game was going on. To the best of my knowledge I have never seen any of those thing happen.

How is it different than making noise/cheering/yelling during 4th and 1 from the 30 yards line in front of the student section?

If they were in the student section yelling screaming and making noise there would be no problem. But they were not in the student section they were running back and forth on the baseline of the court and standing directly behind the bench. Have you ever seen any one standing on the court at a basketball game yelling during a foul shot or on the field during that forth and 1 play. I never have.

Was at a volleyball game this evening and there were several student that came out to support the girls and at times it sounded like the student section at a basketball game. I for one thought it was an Awesome atmosphere for a game and the girls on the floor felt the same. Gave them even more motivation to do their peers proud! I didn't hear any complaints from the visiting team eithier. I heard all the chants that have been mentioned in this thread "balls up" "push it" etc. Refs didn't stop play to quiet them down so I assume all was well in the spirt of the fans. I even recall at one point the away team did something wrong and the student section chanted "you can't do that" like they do when a traveling call is made in a basketball game. I am new to the sport mostly due to my daughter playing middle school and wants to support her cousin in high school but I really enjoy watching the games and especially tonight's game because it had that basketball feel to the gym.

It was a good game, but yes, a little bit wild. Both teams fought hard though. Exciting.

My daughter plays volleyball and to be honest I like the crowd being rowdy...as long as they are off the floor and not saying anything nasty to the players let them yell and be wild. I think it makes it a fun and exciting venue.

I agree completely. That is what makes sports fun. Having the crowd into the game. Cheering for their team even getting on the opposing team. Just keep it in the stands.
