BBHS wins 1st 2 games, HHS comes back to win the next 2 to take it to a 5th. BBHS wins 5th easily. Great win for BBHS on a night that both teams struggled to serve consistently. BBHS Football team (all 22 of them) showed up to support the Lady Stangs and help the girls to victory.

I read a rant on FB from a Highlands mom I know who said the Brossart students were out of control, cursing and harassing the Bluebirds' players and that Dan Ridder would be getting a call today. Did you see anything? She said the principal was there last night and let it go on; that doesn't sound like Dan or Brossart students to me! Just wondering.

I was there and that is not true. They did show up and were yelling during the HHS serve so the Ref stop the game and call Dan Ridder over and asked him to tell them they could not scream while the HHS players was serving which he did (KHSAA Rule). The kids were loud and a little annoying and they did get in the players and even the coaches head a little BUT the HHS players were smiling and laughing about the student section. Hell the coach even gave them a thumbs up when they were mimicking her every move for about 10 mins.

I hope she does call Mr. Ridder because he was standing next to them most of the time after the ref stopped the game and handled it.

Sour Grape from HHS. Sorry no one from HHS shows up to support their volleyball team except family members. Brossart support from their student section was loud and I thought it was Great!!!!!!!!

If cursing happened I did not hear it and I was sitting right next to them.

Thanks. I told her the same thing I said here: that it didn't sound like any Brossart kids I knew and that Dan Ridder would not tolerate things like that. Much ado about nothing.

The Brossart student section was loud last night. I thought it did get over the top at times.

Finally in the 2nd set the ref stopped play and asked someone to calm them down. (Assume it was the principal based on the previous thread comment). At that point, the HHS players were serving right in front of the Brossart students. Of course that caused them to get even louder.

 

At the beginning, they were loud no matter who was serving. I assume they got a hint from someone and went silent when the home team was up to serve but went active when HHS stepped up.

The ref should have put a stop to it much earlier.

 

**Personally didn't hear cursing. Doesn't mean they didn't, but I turned on my bull:poop: filter. If my daughter had been on the court getting harassed, I'm sure I would have been paying much closer attention.

 

I've seen it happen a couple of times each season, when one of the boys teams show up to support their girls.

I honestly don't know if "quiet during the serve" is an actual rule, unwritten rule, or just a generally accepted practice.

In any case, I would hope that the coach, any coach, who sees they have a larger than usual student crowd - they would take a moment and speak to the "ring leader" before the game. *Although, as I type that, I'm thinking that the home coach would want it to get as loud and obnoxious toward the visiting team for as long as the ref will allow...

 

What irritated me was that after they calmed the student section down, one of the brossart players began to let out a scream/screech/yell as highlands went to serve. I noticed one player doing it fairly consistently, but there could have been others doing it as well. That senior outside hitter knows better but was probably caught up in the excitement. Was thinking it showed a lack of class...

 

I wish I could have stayed to see the Birds battle back. The first two sets had some serious ups and downs. From the Birds perspective, we gave Brossart more points then they earned. Too many serves into the net and too many hits over the back line...

Technically - there's no rule against yelling/noisemaking during a serve - and that applies to players, coaches, the bench, and fans. Obviously, you can't bring in air horns or whistles or anything that is already banned, and you can't yell expletives or personal insults directed at the team or one player.

 

But then there's the good old catch all - the "unsportsmanlike behavior" clause, subject to interpretation by officials. If an official thinks it's too much, they will envoke that clause. But the point of "too much" is going to vary. The bottom line is you can make noise, as long as it's clean and not out of control in the officials' eyes. That threshold will vary.

Thanks for the info, AllenR. The parent made it sounds SO much worse than what I am hearing on here. Good luck to both teams during the rest of the season.

First of all, congrats to Brossart on a very nice win. Both teams battled very hard and I came away very impressed with several players from both teams. The fans were fantastic! The student section for Brossart, as well as parents from both sides. Very loud in the newly airconditioned gym. I even heard Highlands parents doing a few cheers and one actually walked onto the court in between games to get her Birds fired up. (Good thing there is not a shoes required policy at Brossart games). I spent time on both ends of the court chatting with old friends, it was all spirited fun. I did see Mr. Ridder speak to the student section and he told them to settle down during the serves, which they did. If anyone was rattled it may have been a couple Brossart players as the footballers were having some fun with their own, especially the Bezold girl.

As I was entering the game, I got suckered into helping a few ladies bring some goodies into the cafeteria. It was my first chance to walk through the newly renovated school. While I didn't get to see the chapel or a couple of the other new features, I peaked into the Munninghoff theater. WOW! is all I can say. I want to give a special shout out to a Highlands parent (Big Vic) who also helped me carry the goods into the building. Good luck to both teams. Both are very talented and the excitement was enough to bring me back to see those teams play again.

If your son or daughter is at the FT line in a tight game on the road.. you would certainly expect it to be loud in any gym. (i.e. Covcath) Why should serving a volleyball be any different? as long as not addressing by name / using curse words / or anything banned..

It does seem odd that I would expect it to be loud during a freethrow, but not a serve...

Not sure why... It's quiet during a tennis serve... (don't know if by rule or just the way it's always been - and not that curious enough to research it)

Just because they are girls and some boys were loud and cheering makes mommy and daddy jump up and down stiff legged.

 

I remember the St. Henry vs NDA Playing for a Purpose game a few years ago and NDA player Heidi Thelen had committed to Penn State and almost every time she touched the ball the Crusader student section would chant "Jerry Sandusky". Admittedly it took a long time to figure out what they were saying and the administrator eventually stopped it.

But it happens.

 

I guess I get frustrated because we complain of no support and then when kids show up and cheer during the serve, those same people get upset. Anyway...it's life, get over it, enjoy it. Sounds like a Big Game environment. Better than the snooze fests I have experienced this season.

I was there as well, and none of that is true. Mr. Ridder immediately stopped the students from cheering during serves, and spent most of the rest of his time by the students to make sure everything was ok. Lots of hype about a fun volleyball game. I think the cheering was fantastic!!

I find it weird that it irritated you that the players on the bench were cheering for their team. Especially a senior captain...it's called teamwork, motivation, leadership, enthusiasm, excitement and a love for the game. BBHS volleyball team is a class act, and I am proud to support them!!

I've seen situations like this during girls volleyball games for the last 20 years. There is actually no rule to prohibit making noise during any part of a game--with the exception of artificial noisemakers. I've seen it ignored, and I've seen refs stop the game to give warnings. Usually the fall back excuse for the ref is the unsportsmanlike conduct reason.

 

Go to a club tournament and listen to the noise you'll find there. Unless someone is cursing at a particular player, nothing is done. A common occurrence is the call of "balls up" right when the server is swinging at the ball. It's not done as a notice that the balls on its way--it's done to hopefully unnerve the server at the point they're making contact with the ball. You've never heard noise til you've played a Puerto Rican team at AAUs--even at the 10 year old level. The girls get used to it. A good player is able to ignore the distractions off the court and play their game. No different than a free throw at a basketball game.
