Is the shine coming off the Rock?

Featured Replies

A 6-6 season last year and no title. Two losses to open the 2014 season. Is Trinity in danger of losing a big edge? If the Rocks lose a couple more and do not win a title, is it going to hurt the program?

Here is where I am coming from. I think the top programs attract top shelf players by what they do on the field. Is there any player in Louisville who doesn't want a state title? If you want a state title ring, where should you play high school ball? The answer to that question has been Trinity. If Trinity follows last year with another average record and no title, those kids in the 7th and 8th grades might start looking around and wondering. Why go to Trinity? Is there a better option?

There is so much talent in Louisville compared to the rest of the state that the super district teams are the best 4 teams in 6A most years. There is too much talent there for Trinity to hog it all. That being said, if you want to get recruited, the most important thing you need to do is get on the field. For many good players, making sure they get on the field trumps winning HS titles.

If Trinity were playing an in state schedule, they would be their normal dominant program. Playing a regional schedule against similar programs helps keep their kids challenged and helps in recruiting.

Scott County and Male have emerged as tremendous contenders in 6A and deserve a lot of credit.

Trinity just doesn't have top shelf talent right now. I do agree that they'd be a 9-1, 8-2 team if they were playing a purely in-state schedule. But I disagree that the regional schedule helps them with recruiting. The state's biggest recruits (Harris - Mad South, Brown - W. East, Sindelar - Caldwell) all play at small schools that play very small school schedules. Getting recruited has little to do with the school you play at anymore now with the prevalence of camps, Hudl, and coaches who now know how to get their kids names out there.

Shine doesn't come off a program like Trinity with one or two down years. The problem is they've set the expectations bar so high over the past decade that even playing a monster schedule doesn't give them a pass in the eyes of some. Even if they don't win this year, and Male is my current pick, I'll give them next year before I start to wonder.

Geez Louise.....its High School Football. You are going to have some not so great years for programs like Trinity. Highlands I feel is going to be in the same boat the next few years. Programs like Trinity are so good that if they fall just a little bit in talent you notice it because of the schedule they play. People the world is not coming to an end...The Trinity and Highlands of the world are not going to shut down because they don't go 13-0 every year and win a state title. Hell I look at it like this..at least you can go to a game at Trinity or Highlands for that matter and finally see a competitive game.

Amen.........well stated

I don't think shine comes off the program, but I do think it is looked at a bit differently. From 2010-2012, it was a special time at Trinity, they were playing and winning on a national stage. The difference now is that while they are still playing their national schedule, they are not winning those games which is fine. Many in the area believed Trinity was going to be on a different level than everyone in KY, but that is not the case. They are still very good, but the thought of them being a national power has shifted a bit. They are still thought highly regionally, but just not so much on a national stage any more. It is tough to do in KY.

I am not saying Trinity is going down the tubes. Not at all. They are clearly still one of the top programs in the state. But their air of invincibility is certainly gone and young players might start to think twice about whether to attend Trinity or perhaps stay/go somewhere else. That then weakens the program.

Trinity will be fine. I think it's great for Football in the state when you have challengers every now and then to the title. I think it is good to have a couple down years because every now and then some programs fans need to be humbled a little. Last year through half the season we all knew that Trinity was not having their typical Trinity season yet many of their die hards would hear nothing of a possible avg year and wouldn't hear anything of T not being the #1 team in the state. Some Highlands fans have the same frame of mind and every once in awhile it is good to knock them down a notch or two.

Trinity will be fine and so will Highlands, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing to have them come back down to earth now and then. It can only make them hungrier which will always be good for any program.

I think the "fall" of Male was a big factor in super rise of Trinity. With Male being relevant in Louisville and 6A again more of the non-CSAA kids start looking back at Male again.

IMO, Trinity should have won both there 1st 2 games. They were certainly in a position to win them both. Trinity is still a Top 5 team in Ky and probably Top 2 or 3 and losing to Tennessee's #1 team and Indiana's #1 team isn't a bad thing. I think it's great that they play a regional schedule that'll challenge them, but, at the same time, not playing any instate teams except the 3 in your district and losing the out of state games, makes you question how they'd do against the other instate powers. It's hard to rank them real high with a mediocre record, but, it's hard not to when they clearly play the strongest schedule in the state.

I do think upstart private schools like Desales and CAL could pull in some of the great players that Trinity and St X would normally get, especially if they're winning titles on a consistent basis.

The demise of the Shamrock program is greatly stretched. OK, so they don't have a boat load of D1 players, now have to compete on a level playing field...... Rocks will rebound no doubt!!!!

I have always wondered about this - why don't more kids go to the other Catholic schools in Louisville? Actually, I have wondered this somewhat in N. Ky. also. If I am a really good player but one who might not get much playing time at Trinity, why wouldn't I go to Desales or Lou. Holy Cross? I believe you could walk the halls at Trinity, find kids not even playing football and there would be enough talented players to make a very competitive football team in the smaller classes. There are players on the roster at Trinity, St. X, Cov Cath, etc. that can only hope to play mop up duty there who would be starters at small schools like Desales and the Holy Crosses in Louisville and Covington.

You can not receive a St. X education and diploma at Trinity, DeSales, Holy Cross, Christian Academy etc. . . . There IS a difference!!!!!!

Some folks actually send their kids to high school to get an education and play sports, as opposed to going to high school to play football or basketball and get an education.
