September 1, 201412 yr Not only ate together had no idea what you were eating was killing you. I don't know about you, but we hardly EVER ate fast food. It was a treat maybe once a month or two if my Dad brought home a pizza from Pasquale's or coney's from the Chili Parlor. We only got a Pepsi if we went out somewhere which as I recall wasn't very often. At home it was milk or "ice water" (and in the summer we better not stand at the refrigerator with the door open chugging on the ice water bottle!) A snack was an ice ball or peanut butter (which we had to mix first) on crackers. Yea, we hunted pop/beer bottles to get money for "penny candy" and yes it had sugar, but we burned it off quickly because we were constantly outside, no matter the weather. We ate together as well. When we heard the 6 o'clock bells, we knew to head home for dinner. And of course we ate as if the plate was going to be taken away in 5 minutes because we had to get back outside! Yes, come to think of it I really miss those days.
September 1, 201412 yr People say they love the good ole days, but I think it's just a nostalgia thing. We have more choices, better food, more tv programming to choose from, superior athletes to root for, instant access, an abundance more sidewalks, faster outputs, advances in medicine, and BGP . With that comes some negatives, I get that, but the positives outweigh them. So by the time you make your phone call on the rotary phone, I will have updated my fantasy roster and finished 8 work emails.
September 1, 201412 yr This black dude says HELL NAH.....screw the good old days. Why does the black man always have to ruin things for everyone.
September 1, 201412 yr Technology isn't always a good thing. Today with all the technology kids have at their disposal makes it tough to actually take time out an enjoy ones company. I do miss when I was little, going over to my friends house, meeting up with a group of friends and playing outside. Playing in the woods, making camps and forts etc. playing kick the can with all the neighborhood kids until dark and then playing ghost in the graveyard. I just don't see kids doing that stuff anymore or using their imagination and making up games to play in the neighborhood. These days it's texting and playing video games online. Sometimes technology advancements take away some good old fashioned fun. Ive also made this comment in the past. As far as professional sports, I think it was better when I was growing up. The media overexposure of sports these days have made professional sports nothing special. I used to look forward to once a week watching TWIB on Saturdays and watching the game of the week. Now you get baseball everyday of the week on tv, over saturation is no coincidence the number of kids playing the game growing up has decreased. The "love" of the game has vanished among many. Football is the same. Used to be you would look forward to getting a chance to watch a football game on Sundays and MNF was huge, now there is NFL on Thur, Sun, Mon and sometimes Sat. Espn has ruined a lot of things that made sports something to look forward to. The over saturation led to too much of a good thing is necessarily good. Agree 100%. If it's above 80 degrees most kids wouldn't think of venturing out of the AC. And you are SPOT ON with the baseball stuff, watching This Week In Baseball was a MUST!!!! Haven't been to a Reds game in 5 or 6 years and it only takes me 5 minutes to get there, and can't remember the last time I even watched more than an inning of a game.
September 1, 201412 yr Do I miss not having air? No. Do I miss the days when Spam was considered a legitimate meat choice for a meal? No. Do I miss the days when I left the house and no one would be able to reach me? Yes, but I could control that by just not taking my phones with me. Do I miss the days when my employer could not expect that I am able to be reached 24/7? Yes, but I also LOVE being able to work from home. Anything I miss is traded off with things I love.
September 1, 201412 yr I absolutely miss the good ole days. It was a much simpler time. We ate together as a family 7 days a week. How many families can say they do that now? Not only ate together had no idea what you were eating was killing you. Other than during Softball and Volleyball season not a chance, however other than those times we always do.
September 1, 201412 yr Eating together...we rarely did that when I was a kid. My sister and I grabbed whatever for breakfast. My dad worked swing shifts so he rarely had the opportunity to eat with us. Once I got to high school I was involved in many extracurriculars so I didn't get home a lot of times till way after dinner time.
September 1, 201412 yr Sure there are some things I miss but who here would trade everything now for those days?
September 2, 201412 yr It all matters on your perspective.......Now you can update your fantasy roster in the time it takes to make a call on a rotary phone....................but a rotary phone private line was soooo much faster than your grandparents (or great grandparents) waiting for someone to get off the party line so they could make a call. So people that now had private lines and refrigerators that do not require de-frosting every two weeks might have longed for the good ole days when life was slower......and people visited neighbors more often etc.
September 2, 201412 yr I miss my hair but other than that I quite enjoy the here and now. I don't miss mine, but Mrs. Lawnboy does.
