With all due respect to Coach Flynn, and I very much appriciate all of his services and time put in at Ashland, I do believe it may be right to start considering that Ashland and Coach Flynn go their seperate ways. Ashland's talent level isn't the same as it once was, and I think Coach Flynn is more accustomed to working with great talent and coaching them to win. He is better off at a Lexington Catholic or Scott Co., where he has a wide talent pool to insert players effectively into his system. What I think Ashland needs now, is someone who can groom players and work to get the absolute best out of them. That is what Morgan Co., Elliott Co., Fairview, and the other teams in the region have done. They get the best they can out of the talent they have. There is no doubt in my mind that Ashland can not say they did the best they could this year with the talent they had. It's time to get a coach who can win with a system revolving around what his players bring to the table, not one where they are haphazardly thrown into a designed scheme. Maybe we need more of a motivator and less of a strict basketball disciplinarian. Just my opinions, take them for what you will. Mike Flynn is a great basketball coach, and his record proves that. But the kids that accumulated that record aren't around today. I don't think he is the type of coach who can win with what he has, he has to have great talent, and I don't think Flynn can win anymore at Ashland. It's time to move on.

I'm a little confused with your statements here. On one hand you say Flynn is a great coach, which I believe he is, and then it seems you say he's not. So which is it?

Ashland has had a miserable season, but they were in the finals of the District, barely losing, and they barely lost the game against Elliott County, who is very good and could end up a Rupp! So there are some bright spots for the Tomcats, but this season is just not what they are used to in Tomcat land!

 

Good luck to Elliott County. I said earlier that it would be Elliott, Ashland or Fairview that goes to Rupp and I stick with it.

I just got home from the game and it was a good one. Ashland won the first half and Elliott won the second. Ferguson is probably the best player in the tournament, in my opinion, and will be the best player in this region soon. I don't think this was an upset by any means - I think this game was a toss up. It could have went either way. I am an Elliott County fan, but I will admit that the shooter on the last play of the game was fouled on the shot and the refs should have cleared the court and allowed 3 free throws. The ref saw the foul and reached for his whistle, but then just threw his hands up in the air and let it go. This is the same ref that I have watched 3 games in a row now and he should probably not be officiating such important games. As an Elliott fan, I'm glad he didn't have the manliness to call the foul, but as a basketball fan its a shame to let that call go. My pick for this game was Elliott 59 - Ashland 55, so I'm happy!

He was watching the play like a hawk and the Elliott defender committed the cardinal sin in that situation. He jumped and grabbed for his whistle and was going to call the foul and then he saw the crowd rush onto the court and just kind of wussed out. Did you notice that?

It was a callable foul. I had a perfect angle. I'm an Elliott fan so I'm glad it wasn't called, but mark it down - the shooter was fouled.

Good luckto our 3 seniors, ADAM CANNOY, TYLER RELIFORD and BRANDON WILLIAMS the rest of the school year and what ever they end up doing in life. Its been enjoyable watching these 3 play.

 

I'm still trying to figure what Flynn was thinking in the 2nd half. The 1st half we seemed to play as a team and everyone got involved and led by 9. In the 2nd half he went to his famous 4 low game plan and let Thomas penetrate one on one. This hasn't worked all year why did he think it would work tonite. When we do this the opposing teams know to double him after he gets to the lane. And with that Thomas who is a great kid and athlete was not on tonight.

Although this game was probably a PK, it was still far from an upset. Elliott is 22-7 (so something) and has a great record in region. Elliott played some great defense and found the open man often (something that has been lacking). Jon Ferguson had a great game with 32, 22 in the second half. Elliott Co. also shot free throws very well (something they have had trouble doing).

He is a great coach, but only when he has the talent. I meant that I don't think he can win anymore with the situation at Ashland, but if he coached at Scott Co. or Lexington Catholic, he would be very successful. He can't take a young team with raw talent and groom them to win, but with already groomed talent that work into his system, he can win. He's a good coach, but not the right one for Ashland anymore. Sorry for the confusion.

Great win for Elliott County, and a huge boost to a very young team. They will be a force for the next few seasons, along with Rose Hill. This region is going to go on a three or four year run now, where we watch some excellent young talent mature.

I'll echo TCatFan, and say "thanks" to the three seniors. They've had a good run, in baseball, football, and basketball. Of course, Williams still has one more season left on the diamond...

Dang....the wolves are out early!!! What happened to the good ol Tomcat faithful that said "the schedule will pay off..." or "we're better than 14-16..." or what ever it is!! Give the guy a break. He got beat by a better team, although I don't understand why he burned that final timeout...he could'v called spread from the bench and saved that one. But, ultimately, EC outworked Ashland and deserved the win.
