I feel ashamed to be as into high school basketball as I am, but I haven't been able to watch Catholic play, and I have never heard of this Beckham kid for them. Holy cow, he is going to be a stud!

So, I have never heard of this Quainoo kid, but I watched him bull over kids for 232 yards last week and he goes for 313 tonight. Um, what is his story? I know he is the real deal. Colleges? He's got 547 yards in two games... could he be a Mr. Football contender?

If Shelvin Mack does not win Mr. Basketball, those who did not vote for him have obviously not watched him play. It's that simple, he is the best basketball player in the state, period. He played out of his mind tonight. HSBBallFan78 said a lot of what I wanted to say, but he is incredible to watch. He missed his first couple of three's and started to penetrate and dish more often. Once his shot came back he began to knock them down. His basketball IQ is off the charts, he sees the floor so well, he knows where everyone is on the court and where they are going. He plays defense, he pushes the ball up the floor, he rebounds, he leads his team. Miller and Hobson may be better talents or prospects, and I've seen them play, but Shelvin Mack is the best basketball player in the state. His line tonight: 32 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals. The scary part is that he wasn't the leading scorer for Station. Dacoby Burnett had 35. At one point I told someone Station may be one of the most dangerously offensive teams I've ever seen. Few times can combine the athletic, run-and-gun ability that Station has with their uncanny shooting. Mack, Burnett, and Morones can all drain shots from outside when they're on. No one beats this team if they play near as good as they did tonight. They will give up points inside, but there isn't a good enough post player to defeat Station himself, and the Defenders don't seem to mind giving up some points inside because they know they are going to get turnovers and will score a lot themselves. With a packed house and the defending state champs visiting, I worried that Mack's supporting cast might not be ready for this kind of pressure game. Obviously, they were. Not a good sign for the rest of the 11th Region.

I've seen Shelvin Mack play 4 or 5 times this season against seeing Miller twice. From what I've seen, Mack is the better of the two players. He simply does it all. I watched Miller take over the LexCath game, but Mack controls every game from the start. Tonight against Henry Clay his shot wasn't falling so instead of taking the jumpers he would give a head fake, drive in, and dish. He probably had 11-13 assists tonight. I haven't seen Hopson play this season, so I can't comment on him. I'm working the Mason Co./Henry Clay on Friday, so I'll get a nice comparison between Mack and Miller this week. All that being said, in this state the kid who is more known (and usually a UK recruit) will win Mr. Basketball. Thus, unless Mack averages a triple double for the season and leads Station to the 11th Region championship and beyond, I have a hard time seeing Darius Miller not winning Mr. Basketball this year.

It's not a discredit to Coach Feldhaus (one of the best in the state, which goes without saying) as I think Morris may be putting too much of the burden of carrying the team on his shoulders while some other players like Simpson are injured. He just showed a tendency to lose focus and intensity, moping around when things weren't going his way. His shot wasn't falling and he made some bad passes on offense and had a few too many turnovers. I think the coach can only do so much to motivate and keep his players focused, at some point, the kids have to be responsible for themselves. Morris is a great talent, and for all I know he probably is a good kid, but it just seems like he needs to focus on what he can do to make the team better and not let his bad nights get to him so badly.

The Defenders pressure defense was too much for a Central team missing a couple key players, including Keyshawn Simpson. Butler signee Shelvin Mack had a huge game with 28 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. If anyone in the gym tonight doubted his abilities as a D-I prospect, they had their minds changed tonight. Station played very hard and for the most part a pretty smart ballgame. They seemed to know this was a big region game and are determined to make it to the state tournament, as seen by their break-out slogan, "state." Aaron Morris had a rough night as he was pressured and double teamed constantly, but he still managed 12 points and 13 rebounds. If a coach could get his mind straight and focused to play good basketball, he could be a really nice player.

Station: Mack: 27 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals Morones: 17 points, 6 assists Combs: 16 points Burnett: 15 points HC: Moses: 21 points, 9 rebounds Nichols: 17 points 34 Turnovers This was a fairly wild game. Station jumped to an 18-2 lead, but Henry Clay came all the way back to make it 22-20 at the end of the 1st. I think there were 5 technicals given out, teams combined for 53 turnovers. Fast break layups and snowbirds all night long. Henry Clay has some athletes, but they need to instill some discipline in order to earn that #9 ranking. Station turned some heads with this score.

This was an outstanding game. Lincoln Co. was very impressive in this one, and if it wasn't for a bad first quarter (Station outscored them 30-15) they win this game. Up and down, fast paced, wonderful basketball to watch. Mack had 18 and 10 assists and Montell Morones had 19 with 4 3FG's. When they are playing their best, Station will be a tough out in the 11th. As for Lincoln, Ethan Spurlin had a great game with 23 points and 7 boards. Noah Keeton chipped in 16 and Dan Ralston had 17. The player I came away most impressed with for Lincoln is Ryan Young. With football ending only on Friday, he didn't start and his shooting was a bit rusty (5/15) but he could not buy a bucket early on. But he made things happen with his speed and floor vision (7 assists) and he proved to me that he could play with the faster guards that Station offers. I think Lincoln has a nice chance of repeating in the 12th, and Young should be getting some college looks.

He was initially listed on the roster, but was scratched out when it was learned he wasn't there tonight. So from that I would assume he still is playing this season.

The second game of Friday's Somerset National Bank/FCA Classic was very entertaining to watch. Somerset scored more points in the first 15 seconds of the game than Frankfort did in the first half against Dunbar in their last game. Ultimately, the Bulldogs had too much athleticism and speed, causing too many Somerset turnovers and easy points on their end. Deon Johnson led the way for Dunbar with 30. He was hitting from all over the court tonight and looked very impressive. Somerset played without John Cole, as I heard something about him being at Stanford? Anyway, I think Somerset will be one of the top teams in the 12th, as they've got some nice size and good senior leadership. I was extremely impressed with the play of Tyler Bourne, who had 27. He's got good size (maybe 6'5'') and a pretty jump shot. He's also very competitive but still collected on the court. I would say he is a prime target for several of the smaller state schools.

True, Hudson's shot isn't very reliable, but I think he sees the floor really well and can play some tight defense when inspired. Johnson has a much better shot, but he is a small guard too. Big teams may give them trouble, but I think they can get up and down the floor with the best of them, and their full court press may give most teams trouble. What do you think about Webb and Rogers? They've both got some length and athleticism and will block a lot of shots, but their offensive game needs work. I think Dunbar could be one of the best teams defensively in the state, in my opinion.

This is not a typo. In short, Frankfort dressed 10 and one seemed to be playing with a bad wrist, and those 10 looked to be very, very young and inexperienced. Also, they may be missing some players on the football team. Whatever the case, this (obviously) was a complete mismatch. Dunbar is a senior laden team that all played last year, and they looked like men against boys out there. The halftime score was 53-1. Dunbar tried to ease off, but they kept their main players in during the first half, and they like to run and play defense. They couldn't help themselves at times. As a sidenote, I think Dunbar may be a very underrated team. They've got two very capable guards in Hudson and Johnson that can both score and play defense. Rogers and the Webb brothers are athletic and can rebound down low. This is basically the same team that greatly underachieved last year, and I wouldn't be surprised if they made some noise and pulled some upsets in the loaded 11th Region.
