I got on the KHSAA website and researched the D2 and D3 teams from last year and there was a pretty big divide within it. Is there

any talk of going to 4 divisions?

Silver Grove 17-13 (D3)

Bellevue- 16-12 (D3)

Ludlow - 15-11 (D3)

Highlands - 9-15 (D2)

Dayton - 7-18 (D3)

Holy Cross - 7-19 (D2)

Lloyd - 6-24 (D2)

Calvary - 5-12 (D3)

Villa - 5-19 (D3)

Heritage - 3-19 (D3)

Cov Latin (not listed above but I assume they are D3?) - 0-19 (D3)

 

I know small schools have their ups and downs, but it seems that some of these schools don't have much a chance to ever have success. I mean with the economy tough on schools and budgets, these small schools would have to travel pretty far to be able to play teams that they have a chance to compete with. I don't mean easy wins, I mean just to compete with. The KHSAA showed a lot of blowout losses. But if as someone posted no one puts any real emphasis on the NKAC then I guess it doesn't matter. I come from a DIV school in Ohio where we were in a DIII/DIV league and had a chance to be competitive. And then when state tournament came around, again we had a chance at some postseason success because it was just against DIV teams. I am not trying to sound dumb, just learning about the KY way. Again, I appreciate peoples comments and helping to educate me on it.

The small schools can play in the All "A" state tournament. It's not a true state title, but the smallest 130 or so schools in the state are eligible to play. Otherwise, as far as I know there are no plans to classify basketball. Football is the only major sport that is classified (with 6 divisions). Again, the NKAC has nothing to do with the KHSAA and is not a recognized conference/organization. There is no NKAC Champion, tournament, schedule,etc. Don't spend another minute thinking about what the NKAC is, what it does, or how it fits in. In Kentucky, it's about district and region. No cool conference names. Pay attention after the season when the NKAC give out their awards, and you'll be good to go.

Classes for basketball is an all time bad idea. My guess is it's at the top of Julian's to-do list.

Somewhat new to the NKY area. How many divisions are there in the NKAC, and which schools are in each one? Is it separated public/private or are they mixed? Thanks in advance!

 

As has been stated above...the word "conference" in KY means absolutely nothing in so far as basketball is concerned. I played my high school basketball in North Carolina where conference meant/means something and are much like districts here in KY, except for the most part our conferences were a lot bigger (more teams belonging to). My advice would be don't get hung up on conferences, you won't get anything out of it. Districts and regions is what it's all about in the battle to get to the Sweet 16 at Rupp.

I am slowly figuring out which schools are in which Districts. Looks like geography can help or hurt you a lot in those in regards to small schools. But hey, look at Hoosiers, the little guys always have a chance. And like you said, they have the all A. Thanks again!

Everyone makes the basketball playoffs. Here is something that will freak you out if you are not from KY. The 4 District winners and the 4 District Runner-ups both advance to the 9th Region Tournament. So yes.... you can lose a playoff game AND still be a Region Champ or even a State Champ. (See last year!)

Wow! That is hard to believe. But with the strong tradition of KY basketball, it must be a system that people like or they would change it. Thanks for that extra tidbit.

Here's a tidbit for you, I would go to every game I could, especially the rivalry ones. Since you are in the 9th region, you are in close proximity to a lot of schools. Check out the scoreboard on the main page of BGP and print off the schedules. I recommend Holmes and Cov Cath and Brossart and Campbell personally. Either way though I'd go check out as many as I could, see what the atmosphere is like at each one. It's worth the experience!

Thanks for the suggestions. I plan on hitting a lot of the boys varsity games at a lot of different gyms. I love the atmosphere at the high schools that have a lot of school pride. And with so many schools in close proximity, I will be able to see a lot of great basketball.

 

On a side note, I love how the KHSAA website has that scoreboard feature that shows schedules, stats, and standings. The Ohio HSAA doesn't have anything like that.

9th/10th doesn't matter. A great game to watch get there early. I believe the Camels will be for real this year!!

Some of us oldtimers still cling to the NKAC conference. It wasn't until the mid-ninties that we private schools were included, and for schools like Brossart and Campbell County it keeps us tied into playing many of the Northern Kentucky pubic schools who might not otherwise schedule us.

 

I still mark the NKAC Divsion II games with an asterisk on the schedule, and on the broadcast intro always mention that this is a NKAC or key NKAC confence game. I doubt that many of our players could recite the NKAC D-II membership, but I do my best to keep it alive.

 

Back during the days when Roland Vories, with Coca-Cola sponsored the conference, it was a big deal, complete with a banquet (often at the Quality Riverview) and individual and team awards. Always had a guest speaker and was a dress-up affair. They used to also present huge team pictures of the conference champions. They might still do that. If you walk into the gym lobby at Brossart you will see the hallway adorned with our conference championship pictures.

 

I remember Ken Shields telling me that he was afraid of meeting Lloyd in the 9th Region Championship game one year, because he had pulled out all of the stops in their conference championship game.
