All you young whipper snappers cannot remember maybe the best player ever at Bracken. How about #44 The Big Horse" Eddie Hopkins. He still is Bracken's leading scorer and has been for 38 years. He scored 33 against Highlands and 24 against Male and a player named Darrell Griffith. He was a great athlete and a state and National champion softball player. I am glad to call him my friend!!!!

 

He graduated in 1975. On the 76 team were Eddie, Kevin Schweitzer, Ricky Figgins, Darren Cooper, Tommy Davis, Donnie Bowles, Gary Galloway, Mike Morehead, Mike Young, Tony Wyatt, David Hopkins, Jeff Rigg, Greg Mains and Steve Grimes.

I'm too young to have watched Eddie play in high school, although I have seen him hit numerous towering home runs in softball...in a day when bats weren't as loaded as they are today.

 

Still, there is a decent chance Crawford will break Hopkins' all-time scoring record after this season--his sophomore year. With all due to respect to Eddie, Adam Reed, Pete Hause, and any other top-notch Polar Bear, that is simply a level no other player has reached.

Austin will shatter Eddie's record but remember basketball is different today than in the 70's. I just don't want Mr. Hopkins be overlooked.

Totally understand and it certainly wasn't my intent to overlook Eddie. I heard all about him & a lot of the guys who played before my time while getting my hair cut at Hal's.

If what I'm reading is accurate, 24 Polar Bears have scored 1,000 points for their career. Eddie Hopkins tops that list at 1,650 points.

 

Austin Crawford sits at #26 right now with 966 points. He scored 699 points as a freshman last year. He needs 684 points in order to surpass Hopkins.

Also, am I correct that there was no 3-point line in the Hopkins Era (I'm not for sure what position he played or whether it would have played a factor). Crawford does have the odds in his favor to break the record with a 3-point line and a total of 6 years of playing. Speaking of Bracken County legends, I have heard rumors of an alumni game?

He has a very realistic chance of scoring 3,000 points for his career. And it's not a ludicrous notion to think that he could double up Eddie Hopkins' point total & finish with 3,300 points, assuming he stays healthy & continues to improve as an offensive player. If, for the next 3 seasons, he merely duplicates what he did as a freshman, he will finish with 3,063 points.

Kid can score and wants to score from the looks of it everytime down the floor. With increased strength and size he will be a definite force in the state.

Austin is a guard and has the ball in his hands almost every play which means he can shoot at will. Eddie played center and did not touch the ball every trip down the floor and I am sure got many put back points. But three pointers will not be the reason he breaks the record.
