Unarmed shoplifter killed by the police

Article also left out that if you want to live in the UK you will be a lot less free. Freedom of speech doesn't exist. Listen if you want to be free there are risks. But I will take my chances in the most free country this world has ever known.

I wouldn't say "freedom of speech doesn't exist" in the UK. It's not as principled as it is here, but freedom of expression is robust there.

I'm just explaining why it's common to compare similar countries to determine the efficacy of different policies. The UK and the US are peers so why does one have outcome X and the other have outcome Y? Figuring out what accounts for those differences in otherwise similar countries is a good way of figuring out how to improve outcomes.

I could make the argument there really isn't a fair comparison for the United States because most of the other "industrialized" countries restrict much more freedom.

Semantics you can be arrested for simple comments deemed hateful or dangerous by authorities . They also restrict the press when dealing with the government in draconian ways.

The only area they really allow adults to be more free is the drinking age.

Read my post on page 34 (Post #670) about the officer in San Antonio. Dude was a complete idiot and not indicative of all police officers' date=' but in my line of work, I see more than one or two officers who seem to be drawn to the job for the wrong reasons. I've also had a mentally handicapped client put in the hospital by police before (though I don't blame them in initially hitting him, but I think they could have done it without putting him in the hospital... he accidentally went into the wrong house because he didn't know any better, but it was probably fairly easy to tell he was in the wrong one fairly quick... I wasn't representing him on that matter, but was just told I couldn't interview him for what I was representing him for because he was in the hospital). Just like there are good police, there are bad ones. What's happening now is that incidents like these are occurring and getting publicized and people think it's indicative of all police officers when it isn't.[/quote']

So you had an officer execute someone?

Picking and choosing my comments . I understand your upset with me because of my belief of the police becoming to much like the military I stand by that comment. But I've been consistent from the start on this case . I didn't buy the fact this guy was an innocent victim ' date=' but I also stated "if" he was shot with his hands raised then the cop should be persecuted. I never asserted this to be fact just what result should happen if it were true. If the story you posted about the eye socket is true then I'm leaning toward the cop . I'm a strong 2nd ammendment person and whether you have a badge or not does not change the fact you have a right to defend yourself if your life is threatened.[/quote']

:lol2: first, you'd have to matter to me for me to be upset with. Your opinions on law enforcement tactics would similar in mine on ice hockey. I've seen some tv, but have no clue what's correct.

Second, from the start it wasn't "if his hands were up". It was if he was unarmed.

Go back, read what you wrote on page one and admit you jumped to conclusions initially.

I think your link explains why just fine:

The explanation for this gap is simple. In Britain, guns are rare. Only specialist firearms officers carry them; and criminals rarely have access to them. The last time a British police officer was killed by a firearm on duty was in 2012, in a brutal case in Manchester.

So while the countries may be somewhat similar in the ways you describe, they are not in others. Their police do not carry guns, so it's obvious they would shoot less people. Guns are not as easy to access in the UK. The last time an officer was killed by a firearm was 2012. The police in the United States do carry firearms. Not doing so, like someone else said (I think) would be suicide. It doesn't mean they are trigger happy like the ignorant title of the article suggests.

By comparison, 27 police officers in the United States have been killed by gunfire this year.

Sounds like my kind of place :D

That's what I'm getting at: guns are harder to get, ergo they are less common, ergo they have less shootings, ergo fewer police officers are killed. I think that is illuminating because we are frequently told there is nothing we can do about gun violence, yet evidence suggests otherwise.

Evidence doesn't really suggest otherwise. Seems that anti-gun laws have been tried in certain cities throughout the United States and failed miserably...

Then why hasn't if failed miserably in the UK, which you just concluded was the reason they had almost non-existent gun violence?

I won't admit I jumped to any conclusions because I specifically withheld all judgement besides saying a I didn't buy that the victim was an innocent victim.

I don't have to be a police officer or worked in law enforcement to understand the constitution . I don't have to worked in law enforcement to understand history and freedom as intended by our forefathers. I rarely ridicule individual LA , I do ridicule leadership and tactical decisions which a I feel infringe on individual liberties. I go out of my way not to criticize an individual officer because I understand like any job they are following orders to earn a pay check like every other person I know.

But I guess I'll have to take your passive agressive attack after you just attacked RM for the same thing.

If you feel I was casting judgement I question your reading comprehension .

They don't value freedom to the same level this country was founded on. They still get taxed to support a monarchy .
