Had more than one team advanced to the playoffs back in the mid 80's, then Paris High School's 1985 team would've easliy won the state championship!

 

That was a situation where sub-districts really stunk. Class A, Region II, District 1 had six teams (Madison, Paris, Mercer County, Harrodsburg, Garrard County and Berea) and the champion made the playoffs. Class A, Region II, District 2 had six teams, but was divided into two sub-districts (Henry County, Kentucky Country Day, Eminence and Frankfort in Sub 1; Carroll County and Owen County in Sub 2), which meant two teams made the playoffs. Why one group of six was sub-divided while the other group of six wasn't, I'll never know.

The Dragons tied Lynch that season. Lynch won the district and won the state championship. Harlan didn't make the playoffs and I don't think they lost a game, one at the most, and had the one tie.

 

Lynch romped through the playoffs that season. Beat McKell by 15, Dayton by 27, and then Frankfort by 8 in the final. Definitely can make a strong case for Harlan being the second best team.

The 98 Mayfield and Beechwood teams were powerhouse teams that particular year, but, both fell to Middlesboro, the Tigers in the semis and the Cardinals in the finals. That particular Mayfield team beat the 3a Tn state champion that year in Milan, Tn 19-7, beat a 5a powerhouse Bellville Altoff, Ill 24-0 on the road, beat a very good Marshall Co team who ended up 11-2 in 4a that year, shut out both Pad Tilghman and Hopkinsville and beat an undefeated Campbellsville team in the semifinals by 38 pts.. As good as the Cardinals were that year, I'm not too sure the Beechies weren't even better. They were coming off back to back titles from 96 and 97 with a Sr laden squad that dressed about 75 kids, pretty impressive for a 1a school. They came into the semis against M'boro at 13-0 with wins over Oh power Ironton, Oh, beat a solid Cov Cath team, beat NCC by about 40 points and were also dominating all there 1a foes till that final matchup. Middlesboro was an outstanding team that year and deserved to be the champion, no doubt, but, I do think either of the 98 teams at Mayfield or Beechwood would have won alot of titles in other years..

Correct. Mayfield's lack of adjustments in the first half had them beat. That game was over after 24 minutes. One of the more surprising routs in the state finals I've seen.

Middlesboro brought the wrath that game and it was never in doubt.

If I remember, Rockcastle had one of the most potent defenses in KHSAA history going in to that game, hardly surrendering any points. The Rebels surpassed their season allotment of allowed points in no time.

Rockcastle had allowed 15 points the entire regular season. However, what many saw as a surprise was actually pretty obvious in hindsight. Rockcastle had beat Ashland in the second round and Bell County in the regional final, both by 14 points, while also allowing 14 in each game. Both Bell and Ashland were four-loss teams. The semifinal win was on a last-second field goal at a five-loss Covington Catholic team.

 

I actually that the 2002 Rockcastle team, the one that demolished Highlands in the semifinals, was actually the better club. Boyle beat them 21-0.

In the Mfd/M'Boro game, the Cards moved the ball effectively from the 20 to the 20 all game long, but, the Jackets were solid in the red zone and just wouldn't allow them to push it in. Snake, you're correct about Wynn. He was a difference maker. It's tough starting every drive at the 20 yard line and if I recall correctly, even when Mayfield forced them to punt, he would punt the ball inside the 10 on a few occassions, making it even tougher. It looked like Mayfield may have withstood the storm after a couple of forced punts in the 2nd qtr, then right before the half, they made a long run for a TD and that really broke there backs. You could sense it when they came out after halftime and the Boro again drove it down there throats and at that point, it was game over..

True. I didn't mean to imply those teams were bad, just meant to say that some of the dirty work had been done for them. And as I also said, the second Rockcastle team was better and Boyle handled them pretty easily, too.
