I think that it's less of a bad move for the Hornets and more of an indictment on what Lance's own team and the league at large thinks he's worth. He'll make things interesting Charlotte, no two ways about that. They'll probably win some games they otherwise wouldn't because he's there, but they're also taking a chance on derailing some of the positive things they've done as of late and doing so in a big way.

 

 

I do wonder what this move means for Gerald Henderson and Kemba Walker.

As much as no one here likes him, there were more than a few teams lining up for his services. Along with Indy, And Charlotte, there was apparent interest from New York, and if Houston woulda taken back Parsons, Lance woulda been in Dallas.

The Lakers were interested also and I was hoping he would go there.

He wanted less years and the Pacers weren't willing to offer it.

True, but Indiana wanted him on their terms. Dallas wanted him as a Plan B if Parsons had bolted (and his a history of signing guys like Stephenson, Jason Terry, etc. anyway), and New York would take anyone who can help them right away.

 

My reservations with Stephenson are not with his talent or abilities, it's with how he's carried himself to this point and the kind of teammate he'd be for someone who'd require the kind of investment it'd take to get him.

 

I think it's fair to say that the Pacers took a big step back this past season, and that he was widely seen as one of the reasons why. Sure, he led the league in triple-doubles, but in 2012 the Pacers almost knocked off the Heat (who went on to win the title) in the conference finals. This year, they were almost eliminated by the 8th seeded Hawk (who were playing without their best player and just weren't a playoff team in most other years/divisions).

 

 

I'm not saying he's a bad player, because he's talented enough to be an All-Star. I just don't think he's the kind of guy who'll be in a championship locker room playing the role he thinks he's able to. For me, he seems much more likely to be on the path of a guy like Carmelo, Iverson, etc. who makes a career of being a great scorer (and player in general) on some teams whose best years are a surprise run in the playoffs and worst years are the lottery.

 

 

I think it's most likely that Stephenson is a rental. He'll be used to re-build the Hornets, who've lost for years and need to win now just to keep fans, energy, and the marketing push from their name change. He'll help get them to a point where they're taken more seriously as a contender, but once the time comes for the Hornets (or any other team) to make moves that look past goals of being a conference semifinalist, then it's probably going to be a hard sell if you're wanting to keep him and swallow all that comes with that.

Yeah, that does make sense to not want him to hit the open market. I just figured that they'd be willing to keep him for 3. Seems weird for a team to be like, we want you for 5 years and we aren't budging off of 5 years. It's usually the other way around with the player wanting long term and the team wanting short term.

I get a kick out of the "Lance caused the issues in that lockerroom" talk. What caused issues is that most of those dudes are soft and let some high school drama cause issues. Then they took the easy way out and pointed fingers at Lance to cover up the fact they acted like teenage girls the 2nd half of the season and playoffs.

 

Glad Lance got out of that mess before they had a chance to put the full implosion on his shoulders. It's coming...

Lance is always going to get a bad rap in a way similar to Cousins. Much like Cousins the hate comes in but no one has any stories to back up the claims.

 

Getting Lance is the one thing the Lakers could have gotten right this offseason. The dummies.
