He reaches out to tag the batter who is heading to first. Umpire says he misses him. He then throws home the catcher whose foot is on home plate for the force out . So at least he got one out.

 

But wait.....

 

Manager of the batting team comes slowly out of the dugout and tells the crew chief that they missed the call on the batter. They claim he was indeed tagged by the first baseman. The crew chief goes to the replay. Replay agrees. The runner was obviously tagged.

 

See where we now have a problem in the biggest moment of the biggest game of the year?

Definitely a problem. That's a situation where the run has to score....sorry defense, tough luck. Should have struck him out.

You are correct. Now as an umpire you have to say "my bad" to the manager whose catcher didn't tag the runner because an umpire gave a signal that indicated the force play was in effect at the plate.

Do you amend the replay rules to say that a manager cannot protest a call that was initially in his favor so as to get an indirect advantage for a subsequent result?

That's a great scenario Clyde, and one that could possibly be quite damaging to the game, but replay has been a problem since day 1 in my opinion.

People who fight replay watch baseball, and see that they still get the calls wrong after spending 3-4 minutes going to replay, and have seen the absolute joke they have made of plays at the plate.

I know I know that's how it's always been...but an error on the part of a player isn't and shouldn't be correctable but an error by the umpires can and should be corrected if they are wrong...has much as they may think different they ARE NOT part of the game, just there to rule on it.

 

But heck I think Balls and Strikes should be taken out of the Umpires hands too. Pitchers and Batters shouldn't have to adjust to each other and adjust to the way the Ump is calling today also.

No, would that be a do over? Runner at first is now called out and runner that was called out at home is now safe...to me a do over is if they put the hitter back in the box to bat again, not correcting a missed call.
