June 17, 201412 yr Used to play this all the time at family gatherings. The one thing I will never forget my great grandmother who has since passed had dementia and couldn't remember anything; However she could tell you every card and who played it. Fun game been far too long since I've played.
June 17, 201412 yr Author Hey its possible that I can swing a hotel meeting room in lexington with one of our sponsors for a rook get together if were all interested for really cheap. I'd be up for that if it was at a day/time I could do it.
June 17, 201412 yr I love Rook. Used to play all the time but not so much anymore. We always played without the 2,3,4 cards with 180 points per hand. There are a million variations depending on who you are playing with, but it is a fun game and I miss it.

June 17, 201412 yr We play without 2,3,4 I believe and play the black 2 as the little Rook. 200 point hands.
June 17, 201412 yr The two main ways I play is with all the cards and the "Bird" card as the low trump (but the highest points) for 200 points. Or, without the 1, 2, 3, and 4 except the black 1 which is the little Rook, caught only by the Bird card for 150 points.
June 17, 201412 yr Author It would be interesting, should we get a BGP group together and play, to see all the interesting rules variations to play by. For instance, I have NEVER played where the Rook is the lowest trump card...that would drastically change bidding and strategy and I wouldn't be used to that. I have also never played where the Rook leads. I usually play "Big Red 1", where the red 1 card is boss trump card, Rook is 2nd, and on down, or straight up where Rook is boss. I have also always played where you can leave points in the discard and never actually knew this was against the basic rules of Rook.
June 17, 201412 yr I've never heard of the Big Red 1 being boss. We play Rook is always the high trump. Winning bidder picks trumps and can lead anything he wants for the first hand. We play you can discard points, but you have to turn them over and show them, and whoever takes the last trick gets those points. Sometimes we turn one of the cards over in the "kitty" so you get a glimpse on one of the cards you are bidding on but I am not crazy about that. I've never played where the Rook is anything lower than boss. Never heard of Rook being low trump, that would be interesting, but not sure how I'd like it.

The middle we have top card showing and high bidder gets it and then discards 6. Any point cards discarded must be shown and whoever wins last hand of round gets the discard pile if it has points.
June 17, 201412 yr I minored in rook while living in the dorm in college. It, along with a few other vices, cost me an extra year in school...
June 17, 201412 yr Always played with everything except the 2s, 3s and 4s. No peeking at anything in the kitty, either before or after declarer makes trumps. 180 possible points per hand.
