Rook anyone?

Featured Replies

Saw Rook mentioned in another post. I grew up playing Rook. Was big back home, may still be. Used to have money tournaments at a lot of places back in the day. At the Vernon family reunion all the men would sit around and play, and I couldn't wait till I was old enough to sit in on that game. Felt I had become a man when I got to finally play at that table.

I have found pockets of places here in KY that play it. And play it with about as many different rules as you can count too. Anyway, who all plays? I'd be up for a BGP Rook tournament gathering, that sounds like a lot of fun.

I liken Rook to Spades — i.e., euchre with more cards.

Love Rook. It's a family tradition especially at the holidays.

How do you play? Is it a card game?

Yes. In short it's a biding game where you and your partner bid against the other team in how many "books" you can win in that hand (point cards). Here are the rules.

I love it and have spent 100's maybe 1000's of hours playing.

Anytime there was a family get together there was at least two games going on at my grandma and grandpa's house. Winners kept playing in the Kitchen and losers had to go to living room or porch and win their way back to the big table in the kitchen. We'd go just about all night playing Rook and eating chips with my grandpa's homemade salsa #Besttimes

They played by a little bit different rules than in the rule book but it made it more fun and competitive...my grandpa and I were pretty much unbeatable, unless we went against my wife and grandma that was the only team we didn't dominate...we were lucky to go 50-50 with them.

I love Rook. Sadly haven't had a chance to play it since I was in high school. My wife is not a big card player and often doesn't remember the rules of games I teach her.

We always played the Red 1 variant.

The way I like to play as well. About a 8-10 recognized rules variances...and I'm sure a lot more local/family rules variances as well.

We didn't use any 1,2,3 or 4's.

120 points max per hand

9 cards per hand

5 in the crib (some times turned top card up prior to bidding but most of the time didn't)

500 point game

Shoot the moon was worth 500 points

Family Rule:

Rook Card was worth 20 points and was a trump card but it only beat the 10 and under of trump cards and all non trump cards. This allowed you to bid and make a hand without having the Bird in your hand...you always had a shot this way.

Love Rook! Learned how to play in the dorms at Berea College. There is an iPad app called Blackbird that gives me my fix, now.

Hey its possible that I can swing a hotel meeting room in lexington with one of our sponsors for a rook get together if were all interested for really cheap.

I love Rook and can play it several different ways depending on the group I'm playing with.
