Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) asked the National Security Agency on Friday to turn over all the metadata it has collected on the email accounts of former IRS official Lois Lerner from January 2009 to April 2011. Stockman’s clever move comes hours after the tax agency apparently claimed it had lost Lerner’s emails from that same time period due to a computer glitch.

Also, in addition to standard backups (full point-in-time, daily partial to restore to specific point-in-time and roll forward, long term archived, and standard redundancy (RAID disk arrays) emails are usually replicated through forwarding, responding, etc. Emails are like herpes - they are forever. Hence why the meta data, even without the contents of the emails would allow for tracking down emails. In fact, the pattern of communication from the meta data may be very telling by itself. Pattern analysis is very good military intelligence technique in times of war.

 

Of course Ms. Lerner also used her 'personal' email account for official business (in violation of government policy - since it works to avoid review such as this).

 

Nothing here is plausible. Not even close. The IT people of this board know it. Average Americans know it. This is not a glitch. It is contempt.

Setting rules (which government should do) and following rules (which government should but is clearly not able to do) are two different things.

And, the same people that brought you this computer glitch, also brought you long wait times for health care at VA hospitals, and falsification of health care documents at VA hospitals. But, don't worry, what could go wrong if they ran everyone's health care?

Word today is that the IRS system is "antiquated" that they were using tape back-up and erasing messages every 6 months or so when they got full. I find this really hard to believe as well. The excuses for why they can't find the emails are less plausible than the original loss statements.

 

How can free email services like Yahoo, Google, etc… store a bazillion free personal emails of nonsense but the government entity that collects taxes still use a "tape" backup ? I guess my expectations are way too high. What could possibly be next in this crazy caper ?

I think the general expectations ARE too high, but appropriately so. Not just for the IRS, but all government agencies. They have proven over and over again. They require a HIGH standard for all outside persons, but repeatedly maintain a LOW standard for themselves.

 

I honestly believe they use tape backup, I really don't even question it. I have observed the VA health system up close and personal for over 20 years, and all the VA hospitals that I have seen up close have consistently underachieved and practiced 20 years behind the rest of the health care world. Why? Because the government and it's agencies require a much higher standard for non-Federal Government healthcare facilities, but does not require the Government health care agencies to abide by the same rules.

 

This is why we shouldn't want to government controlling yet another portion of our lives, they can't properly manage the programs they run currently, why should we expect a new iron in the fire to magically work well.

Some may say that the emails did not the standard cited above. But in the very beginning it cites the types of emails to preserved in printed form.

Again, what emails are to be preserved in paper files:

 

"...policies, decisions, procedures,..."...as to how to treat conservative and Constitutionalists groups.

As has been mentioned, the emails are backed up somewhere, probably in multiple places. Pretty transparent scheme.
