June 9, 201412 yr Here's something that is probably blasphemous for any country music fan to say, but I wouldn't have any Johnny Cash on the list. I don't consider him country. I consider him more "rock" than country. Am I the only one? Maybe his "finger to the man" kind of attitude endears him to a rock n' roll audience, but I don't think his music crosses over all that much. Maybe his America recordings do, though. Then again, this begs the question of what defines country music. I think there's always been a certain rebelliousness at the heart of it.

While I think there is a "you know it when you hear it" quality to it, for me, the thing that makes country special has always been the story versus the music. Half of my favorite country songs are a dude on a guitar, playing about 3 chords, but telling a great story. Not for everyone, I get it, but it is what I love about it.

The last country concert I went to was Robert Earl Keen at the Madison for $25 bucks and it was a great show. Why anyone would pay a small fortune to see some of the acts in the concert series is beyond me.

I try not to begrudge anyone that (but I'm guilty of being a snoot at times). To each their own. But popularity doesn't necessarily mean good. As a crude analogy, "The Hunger Games" was the most popular movie last year, but I don't think it was on anyone's Oscar list.

June 9, 201412 yr But popularity doesn't necessarily mean good. There it is. The reason this thread started. What is GOOD music? How do you define GOOD music. We are not really happy with how the Rolling Stones defined good country music. There is a reason why I rarely ever voice my opinion on the music I like. I never have. People are so quick to judge someone else's music preference---and it's usually in an arrogant mean spirited way.
