Rolling Stone Names 25 Greatest Country Songs

Featured Replies

Thank you! Seriously, the first verse is pure country gold!

Well I woke up Sunday morning

With no way to hold my head, that didn't hurt

And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,

So I had one more for dessert.

Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes

And found my cleanest dirty shirt.

Then I washed my face and combed my hair

And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

It's just a great tune.

Actually, I think they did a pretty good job with it. :walk:

Saw Steve Earle do a four-hour show at 328 Performance Hall in Nashville in the mid-90s. He covered several Stones songs from their early-70s country-tinged era (apparently Gram Parsons and Keith Richards being party buddies at this time had a good affect on the music). "Dead Flowers" is the best example, but "Sweet Virginia" is another good one.

Earle tended to refer to them as "among the finest practitioners of British hillbilly music."

That's good stuff. Townes Van Zandt's cover of "Dead Flowers" is awesome. As is Gram Parson's cover of "Wild Horses."

Still have some old Flying Burrito Brothers vinyl.
