What have you done to prevent college students from doing drugs?

 

I have done plenty along with other members of my community. We have 5 kids at West Point from my school and most of the kids in our community fall back on OSU as a back up plan if they don't get above a 30 on the ACT to go to an even higher institution. I don't have dope heads in my community.

And yes you do. Even some of the ones that get a 30 on the ACT. Guaranteed.

What about they idea that they bought the weed together, and had the scale to 1.) make sure they didn't get ripped off, and 2.) make sure each got an equal half?

 

Hey I already said that. I solved the crime first.

I support legalization of marijuana but an ounce & a half of weed is a significant amount of pot. Is he the biggest dealer on the block? Absolutely not, but it's still more than most people have & certainly more than every "casual smoker" has.

 

Consider this: An ounce is 28 grams. Quick had an ounce & a half (roughly 42 grams). A joint is somewhere between .5 & 1.0 grams. So, if he's rolling monster doobies, he has enough for 60+ joints.

 

60 joints = 2 a day for a month. So he has a 1 month supply of pot. He must be taking an economics class in consumption concepts.

We've met the yearly quota for 2014, it's all downhill from here.

So it's OK because a lot of them do it? If schools are drug testing aren't they knowingly putting them self at risk of getting kicked off of most teams? Just stupid and selfish IMO.

 

As to the bolded: bingo! I don't care what the rule is that they broke. If the rule they broke was "you can't wear flip flops" I'd feel the same way: they aren't disciplined enough to follow a simple rule. I won't debate whether smoking pot is good or bad for you; I won't debate how many college students smoke pot. Those things are irrelevant to me. The Coach has a rule and they weren't disciplined enough and did not accept the personal responsibility to follow it. Period. They now pay the consequences and I feel no sadness for them.

We start educating the kids before they get to college if you wait till then it's too late, thought you would know that.

 

It's a waste of time going back and forth with you. In your first post you seemed upset asking if "it was worth it." Then have rationalize it since.

 

I get it that you don't care if people do Marijuana and you already feel it's too late in colleges. Like I originally said I hope you don't care when one of my OSU guys gets busted either. I understand your position and you do mine.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "dope head", but if you have a large enough community, I'd guarantee that you have someone in it that has experimented with marijuana or worse. You may not know about it personally, and they may do a good job of hiding it, but at this point in my educational career, I've been to all kinds of schools, from some of the "worst" in Kentucky to a private school I owe $30K per year. NONE of the schools, from the roughest to the nicest, are immune to that type of thing and I would even go as far as to say the nicer the place is, the worse the temptations are.

 

 

As far as the achievement/IQ thing, there are a number of studies that suggest that people with higher IQs are, on average, more likely to experiment with drugs (links below). This isn't even getting into the fact that kids who come from homes that are better off economically are probably going to have more disposable income and the ability to use more frequently should they want to, or the fact that people who sell drugs are probably going to be more likely to "push" on them because they see them as money to be made.

I asked my original question because to me, it's not worth it. That doesn't change the fact that I don't care if other people do it. Just means I wouldn't do it, because I don't think it's worth the risk that is involved.

I'm okay with college kids smoking pot, and I'm okay with their coaches punishing them if/when they get caught.

 

This situation is pretty difficult to defend, in my opinion (for the reasons LN cited in post #112). And I fully support legalization.

I'd be willing to bet that you are 100% wrong. And it's that type of blind eye which allows the problem to multiply. Not necessarily marijuana, but heroin (at least in Northern Kentucky).

 

I'll never forget a story that my friend told me. He is very actively involved in the Northern Kentucky Hates Heroin project (and other similar projects aimed at the NKY Heroin problem). He hosted one of the "town hall" type of meetings and reported that almost every family walked in asking how they could stop the trailer trash, migrant workers, etc. from OD'ing on heroin. Part of the struggle is convincing the public that this isn't everyone else's problem: it's your problem.
