May 9, 201412 yr When it comes to running, shoes make all the difference in the world. Don't buy the cheap stuff, because you really do get what you pay for. Most people I know that do a lot of running use Asics. My legs. knees, and shins used to kill when I ran in regular gym shoes. I got some brooks and it has been much better. Must have if you run often.

May 9, 201412 yr And lest anyone dies doing a 5K on my advice, I do NOT recommend that approach. That is dangerous and you should actually train a little before hitting the racing circuit lol.
May 9, 201412 yr I'm going to run in one on June 7th, and then another one on June 27th. I don't want to die while running in either one. :lol2::lol2:All help and suggestions are welcome I ran a few 5Ks a couple of years ago and I now I despise running. I started off running around my neighborhood. One trip around my neighborhood was .8 of a mile. When I began training I would start off trying to run as much of a lap as I could without stopping. I ran every day until I could make it twice around the neighborhood without walking and normally wouldn't run on a Saturday to rest and then start back up on Sunday and would gradually increase my distance each time out. 5Ks aren't like half marathons and marathons where your body requires a recovery period and if you are in your neighborhood you can always walk home if you get too tired. When I finally ran in 5Ks I was able to run them without stopping and running in new areas made it easy on the mind. I suggest you figure out some good running music as well. I had some songs that would get me pumped and my speed and stride would increase as I enjoyed the music. Good luck. I think running is stupid and I'll never do it again.

I don't want to die while running in either one. :lol2::lol2:All help and suggestions are welcome Good news is that it's only 3.1 miles or whatever. How I started for the Tough Mudder was to start at 1 mile. Each week and another .5 mile. You only need to get up to 2.5 miles for training b/c adrenaline will do the rest. Do that 1x per week. 2xs per week just run one mile. Also do some sort of lifting to keep muscle and strength. Running makes you weak.
May 9, 201412 yr I just went out and ran one last weekend...after sleeping 3 hours in my driver's seat...after drinking a 12-pack of Corona Light. I completed the race and survived. I'm supposed to run another one tomorrow morning. Why are you running them?
May 9, 201412 yr LRCW my wife downloaded an app for her phone that gradually works you up to a 5K and then a 10K if you are up to it. The app is called 10k runner and costs $3.99 You start off slow and work you way up. Day 1 is a 5 min walk, then alternate between 1 min run and 1.5 min walk and you do that 6 times, then a 5 min cool down walk. You do this 3 days a week and the run times gradually increase and the walk times gradually decrease. She likes it because she can listen to music the whole time and when it is time to run/walk the app will chime in and instruct you.
May 9, 201412 yr She just told me that this program, at 3 days a week, is supposed to get you ready to run a full 5K in 8 weeks. So you may not be able to run the whole thing by June 7, but maybe by the late June 5K you will be. Whatever you do, man, good luck. I hope you take it slow and don't overdo it. She also says make sure you get the right shoes. Go to Roberts Running in Huntington and let them help you get the right style/fit for your stride, etc. It will make a huge difference.
May 9, 201412 yr How do you guys feel about Nike Air Max or Shocks? Horrible running shoes. But out to be honest form has as much if not more to do with it then your shoes.
May 10, 201412 yr Why are you running them? Because I've decided to reclaim my body and get back in shape and I'm still highly ticked off over getting screwed over by a girl (did you want an honest answer? lol). I view it as a great Saturday morning cardio session.
May 10, 201412 yr It's 1:50 a.m. and I'm running a 5K at 8:00 a.m. My training program is clearly something else...
May 10, 201412 yr I want to finish, but I am having a friendly competition with a friend to help raise some money for two charities. My current fitness level is non existent. I want to beat him, and his fitness level is slightly more active than mine, but he's 10 years older than me. Then start out slowly. Mix jogging with walking. As you get more conditioned increase the jogging distance. Any weight you take off will help. The temptation with running is to push oneself to fast and injuries occur. I ran my first organized 5k in 34 years last night. I hadn't planned it and had already jogged 3 miles in the AM. However I just stayed slow...just did it for charity and social reasons and I was fine.
