How devoted to this being a break even enterprise is the city? The reason I ask is that he City of Louisville owns the Louisville Water Company. The Louisville Water Company is certainly no a breakeven operation because it pays dividends to the City of Louisville. So basically we in Louisville have an under the table tax on us simply by paying our water bill.

Well Somerset owns it's own Natural Gas wells in Eastern Ky and makes pretty good money on that operation as they sell to many surrounding cities while keeping the natural gas prices in Somerset some of the cheapest in the nation. They also own and run water and sewer without losing money. Then several years ago the City started doing all commercial trash hauling in the city and use that money to help defray cost incurred running the Water Park. So as a whole the city of Somerset is a pretty successful at running their enterprises.

 

BTW the City has also lowered property taxes several times in the last 8 years and I look for the City Portion of my property taxes to be abolished in the near future.

 

Biggest issue I have with them is the continuous threats to take the majority of the occupational tax collected by the county, which would cripple Pulaski County Government.

They already have the bulk holding tanks and pumps that city vehicles use. All they would be adding is a card reader for payment. My understanding is that every Citizen in the City Limits would receive a card of some sort that would activate the pumps or allow us to pay form the gas. The station would be out of the way a bit but if your saving 15cents a gallon the extra 1-2 miles is worth it.

 

I still lean to this is more of a political move to ensure reelection than a practical solution to high fuel prices in Somerset. Somerset routinely has gas prices higher than every surrounding town sometimes by as much as 20-40cents which is what has triggered this.

 

Which makes zero sense given there's a refinery smack in the middle of town. If anything, it should be 20-40 cents cheaper than everywhere else since they don't have to truck it anywhere and pass along transport costs.

Yeah but it was closed for the last decade and just recently reopened. There is a certain person who has a near monopoly on the wholesale gas sales in this area that helps keep the price high for some reason. I'm sure if you think back Jim you'll know who I'm talking about.

It's not hogs at the top, it's the local hogs...as I said our gas is higher than surrounding towns, that's why the city is saying they are looking to do this.

Then go for it - if it's cheaper through the city, then more power to them.

No none are overtly political. This is a "Hot Button" topic in our community because the local gasoline prices are always higher in this area than they are in London, Corbin, Monticello, Stanford and Mt. Vernon, all surrounding cities, that are for the most part served by the same fuel distributors.

 

While I don't think they will have the capacity to run the others out of business, especially since this is just for City Residents (12K) and not for the rest of the Counties Residents (50K). Between county residents and tourist I think the local businesses will hardly notice.

Always seems to be. We went to the Smokies a few weeks ago and gas was 40cents cheaper than it was here.

Somerset getting some love for doing this

Hats off to Somerset, they are tired of the bull crap fake supply and demand issues and the emotional instability by oil traders on Wall Street.

 

According the big oil and Wall Street there never was enough oil for the whole world to use. Funny how no stations are ever out of gas though , they have plenty for sale at almost 4.00 a gallon.

I don't know, but if I owned a gas station in Somerset, I would be up in arms about this. My dad owned and ran a mom and pop convenient store gas station for several years, and made mere pennies on the gallon for gas, almost no profit in it and he said it was more of a hassle than anything. BUT, if he didn't sell it, then far fewer people would stop and come in and buy cigarettes and beer, the two biggest profit margins in the store, and then snacks, drinks, etc., which are the things that he depended on to make money.
