May 2, 201412 yr ...then you can't be an officer in the U.S. Army Is this unconstitutional? Kentucky Guardsman Sues Over Tattoo Rules | LEX18.com Kentucky Guardsman Sues Over Tattoo Rules LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A Kentucky National Guard soldier with aspirations of joining a U.S. Army special operations unit wants a federal judge to overturn the military's new regulations concerning soldiers with tattoos. Staff Sgt. Adam C. Thorogood of Nashville, Tennessee, said the ink covering his left arm from the elbow to the wrist isn't harmful, but the Army is using the body art against him and stopping him from joining the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Thorogood sued Thursday in U.S. District Court in Paducah, Kentucky, seeking to have the new rules declared unconstitutional. The regulations went into effect in March and ban any soldier with tattoos from seeking a promotion to warrant officer or commissioning as an officer. An Army spokesman did not immediately return a message Thursday. (Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.) Edited May 2, 201412 yr by Watusi
May 2, 201412 yr And we wonder why people don't want to join the military! If people want to serve the country I don't care if their face is covered with tattoos.
May 2, 201412 yr Author Does anyone know the wording of the rule? As I understand it, you can be a soldier with tattoos, but not an officer. Is it all tattoos or just visible tattoos? The words tattoo and military go hand in hand throughout our history. So why the sudden switch?
May 2, 201412 yr You can't be a Kentucky State Trooper if you have a tattoo that is visible when wearing the short sleeve summer uniform either I believe.
May 2, 201412 yr How do they find enough people to be officers? Why do people have to go get tattoos?
May 2, 201412 yr Why do people have to go get tattoos? They don't.....and apparently if they want to be a Army Officer or KSP they probably should not!
May 2, 201412 yr I think it's stupid, but one reasoning I heard was if you happen to be captured and have religious tattoos, that can be an uh oh.
May 2, 201412 yr Why do people have to go get tattoos? How does having a tattoo impact a person's ability to do their job?
May 2, 201412 yr I think it's stupid, but one reasoning I heard was if you happen to be captured and have religious tattoos, that can be an uh oh. I'm thinking that being captured is enough to be considered an uh oh.
May 2, 201412 yr A Soldier cannot have an Extremist, indecent, sexist or racist tattoo. Also, here's the language for the rest: Soldiers are prohibited from having tattoos or brands on the head, face, neck (anything above the t-shirt neck line to include on/inside the eyelids, mouth, and ears), wrists, hands, or fingers. Soldiers may have no more than four visible tattoos below the elbow (to the wrist bone) or below the knee. The tattoos in these areas must be smaller than the size of the wearer’s hand with fingers extended and joined with the thumb touching the base of the index finger. The total count of all tattoos in these areas may not exceed a total of four. There's more detail in the regulation, but that is the most important parts.
