I met Coach Hicks several years ago. He was very friendly and extremely cordial. He's also one of the best coaches in the state if not the best.

Scott Co. was moved to the 11th Region in 2005 from the 8th Region. They were in the 32nd District with Williamstown, Walton Verona, Owen Co. & Grant Co.

 

they were placed in the 42nd District after the KHSAA blew apart the 43rd of being a 5 team Lexington city district & put Scott Co. with Henry Clay, Bryan Station & Sayre. When the new school in Lexington gets built, I am pretty sure that it will also be placed in the 42nd to give them 5 teams to go along with the 43rd.

 

Time will tell if they ever build another school in Scott Co. & if they do, then the KHSAA will have to look @ an overhaul but that is 5-6 years away.......... at least.

I've talked to the guy several times and it's not like he's a jerk or anything. But, how many people have you ever talked to who are just jerks in a casual conversation? I swear Billy sold me a used car once. At least that's the vibe I get from him.

 

 

There's a difference between "jerk" and being "extremely nice and cordial." I know many coaches who if approached by a stranger like me would not be a jerk but would also not be super friendly and welcoming.

Come on dude, are you just trying to be argumentative now? As far as districts go, it's not the toughest district in the state, but it's far from the easiest. Henry Clay was talented and had a super star in Jordan Greene and came on like gang busters at the end of the year. Bryan Station was small but very athletic. Either team can be dangerous on a given year. Sayre...yes they are definitely the weak sister of the bunch but they have to be in a district with someone. And it still remains that the 7th region is one of, and some seasons the toughest region to advance out of.

I'm more surprised that people thought he'd be some kind of terrible guy. I've met Coach Hicks before, and like the vast majority of coaches around the Commonwealth that I've interacted with, he seemed like a great guy.

I think this year and 2012 is some of the best coaching Hicks has done. He's had more talented teams not make it as far as those two teams did. Sometimes you can't coach chemistry.

I've know Billy Hicks for many years. From Evarts to Corbin to Scott Co. Have kept in touch for years and watched his teams play all over even in Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach a couple times. Billy is a very nice person and always a Gentleman. He will kick you when on the Court but as a former Coach I wouldn't want it any other way.

That has to be the easiest district to get out of in the state.

Only you can put aside bias and objectively assess these situations.

I'd say about half of the year they were in the top 5. I think it was when they beat Trinity that they finally made the top 5. For most of the year they weren't even considered the best team in the 11th Region.

True story. This wasn't the most talented edition of the Cardinals top to bottom either though.

 

The teams with Guyn (Cincinnati), Manning (Marshall), Jackson (NKU), Ivey (Gardner Webb), and company had way more talent than this group when you look at the teams top to bottom. Even some of the teams with Phares (Louisville walk-on who got injured) were, in my opinion, more talented as a whole than this group.

 

I'd say that getting this group to the State Finals when they shared a bracket with two teams in Hopkinsville and Trinity (who were widely perceived to be better than them) was one of Hicks' better coaching jobs.

That should have said the 11th region since I was talking about Scott County. My bad.

Not a big fan of some of the things that have happened in SC over the years, however having been to a couple of their practices over the years, I can honestly say they really give the kids all they got as a staff when it comes to player development.

 

Very impressed with that part of coach Hick's program.
