How to get recruited for D-1 football

Featured Replies

I'm actually finding this thread very informative. But I have a question: Say your kid plays both sides of the ball and submits film highlighting that. A school responds stating they love the film and would like to personally invite your kid to their camp for further evaluation, but do not state as to whether they like him on the defensive side of the ball or offense, and the email is from Operations personnel verses an offensive or defensive coach or coordinator. So, my question is once you arrive at the camp how do you know which group to send him with? Do you showcase him as a RB or DB? Or do you ask the person who sent the email to specify?

Ask what they liked about the film, where do you see me playing at the next level. Would I be a player you would recruit. The key is to get them to know who you are before showing up. If they really liked the film they will respond to the questions.

One more thing to add. If a D-1 school offers you on just film. Do not go to their camp! If a schools HC calls you and offers (then they will contact your HS coach) don't go to their camp. This only gives them a reason to pull the offer. Not saying this would happen but what else do you have to show the school. Spend that time at another schools camp. Remember this cost is all on you travel camp cost. Have a back up plan! Don't rely on just one school. Offers come in bunches schools will offer just because you have an offer. Your job is to let the other interested schools know you have an offer.

.

This is what real interest looks like from a D-1 school. This was about attending a summer camp. My son did not go and this school offered anyway later in the year.

I understand that this is no easy feat given our distance from Kentucky. However, as I coach XXXX position I truly like XXXXX ability and think he would be a great fit in our offensive scheme. I attempted to call XXXX today and use my one permitted call and was unable to get in touch with him. I just wanted to reiterate my personal and our teams interest in XXXX and hope attending one of our camps is still something you both will consider. Congrats on your offers I knew it was only a matter of time before they came your way. Have a wonderful afternoon and Go XXXX!!

Thanks. Every little bit helps!

IMO you are not being recuited until you have an offer. Offers should come in the spring or summer before your senior year. Schools are recruiting early. Your JR. film is the most important!! Getting it out now and seeing where you stand is the key. If you have all the physical tools - height, weight, speed - I believe a kid could have bad film or subpar and still get offers. That's if you go to camps. D1 coaches are all about what the kid will become with a few years in their weight room.

Kids get offers with out playing varsity football. How? Camps, and great physical tolls. Size and speed. Happened at Dixie - Zeke Pike had big time offers at QB before he was even the varsity starting QB.

It's that time of year. Please read the info on how to give your son the best chance to get offers. This is what I did. It work well for my family. This was a 3 year process of trail and error. My goal is to help parents, give info and hope that more kids from NKY can get a free education.

Having a friend who does recruiting for HS players, believe me, if a parent, friend, brother, etc. would try and contact a coach about his or her son or daughter, 99 out of 100 times the college coach would never take that call. Your HS Coach can be a HUGE help, and yes, you both are right, it's not his or hers HS coaches job to find a sch. for the player, but again his or her HS coach sure can be a HUGE help in the process.

Believe me. This info is 100% not true. If your son is a D1 player. Coaches will call you back take your call. Don't sit back and think your HS HC is going to find you a school. Why would a D1 schools 500 miles away know your HS coach or care if he is the one contacting them. Their job is to find players. From any place or part of the US. Expecting your HS HC with a few D1 contacts to find you a school. Isn't a good idea.

Read and help more NKY kids get a free education!

Very interesting thread. I know time is of the essence when recruiting such a broad range. However, I wouldn't be as interested in your top 25 plays as I would be the rest of your game.

Do you take plays off?

How hard do you go?

Do you hustle and exert the effort needed to help me?

What kind of practice player are you?

Are you a leader or a follower?

Some players are natural and some players are coachable. I want guys that are coachable. Although a little natural is great too!

Kash Daniel showed the value of getting to camps to be seen. He had no big offers until he hit a camp in Charlotte. Suddenly, schools like Florida and Ohio State knew of him and started showing interest. Fortunately, so did UK.

Camps are the =1 way to get recuirted. If you want to play D1 go to camps and compete. Kids get offers on size speed skill. Film matters. Stats don't. If you have the size speed skill. Send out film go to camps.

With HHS QB signing with a DI school it only goes to show what many of us have been preaching for a long time. What happens on the field on Friday Nights is not what gets players recruited 90% of the time. It is attending camps and combines. This kid hasn't been a starter for varsity yet and has yet to complete a pass as a starting varsity QB yet he already has a DI scholarship. This is the same kid that many Highland Fans were worried about going into this year and many didn't even know if he'd be the starter.

I hope he kicks butt this year (except for the first game of the year ;) )

100% right. Friday night stats wont get you offers. Lots of very good HS players never get an offer. d1 looks at what can be. Not what is. If a kid has the size and speed skill to play at that level. It's not as hard as some may think to get offers. There just are not many kids with the tools D1 is looking for. So if a kids has those tools it's easy to have them found. D1 coaches are looking for reasons to rule a kid out. He's too slow, too short, no skill. Also Muti sports can help. My son was a varsity basketball player. Started for 3 years. Coaches loved that. Watched a high lite film of an O Lineman that was recuited at the school my son is going to play for. 6'8 310lb kid dunks tomahawk at the end of the football tape. Nuts a guy that big can jump. Kid was a very good bball player in HS.

Yep. You have to bring the right stuff to the table physically or it's going to be very, very tough. If you got the size, speed and other measurables, it gets easier, but you still have to put yourself in position to be noticed.
