How to get recruited for D-1 football

Recommended Posts

Just want to share my knowledge of how to get your Son into a good position to be recruited.

1. Size/Speed matters. If you are a big guy lineman DL,DE, Then you better fit the mold. 6’3 and up. 225 + pounds with a great frame to put on more weight. The shorter you are the faster you have to be.

2. Great varsity film! JV freshman isn’t going to work. Hi-lite film with your best plays.

3. Don’t rely on your High School coach to do all the work!!!

4. Email your film to every D-1 school. It only takes one to get a free education. Email the OC,DC,HC,and your position coach. When they respond ask direct questions. (Do you see me playing for said school) remember to get any personal email back is a good sign. Narrow down who responds when you email them and get more direct. Ask what they like about your game, how do you get recruited by their school.

5. Go to camps with personal invites ONLY. When you sign up for the camp call txt email the staff let them know you will be there.

6. If you play muti sports let them know. Send an email (Coach I’m a varsity baseball player) Send links to any press you get from any sport.

7. Send lots of emails. Start your email with something that will catch their eye in the subject line (6’5 220lb QB 4.6 40) Then state in the email all your stats Height weight football stats yards tackles ext.) Then link the high-lites to it.

8. Be honest. If your 6'1 don't say your 6'4!! At camps they take your shoe off height and weight.

Good luck hope this helps!!

My experience is a little different. I find that at the d1 level, they are obsessed with combine metrics for speed, agility and change of direction. To the point where they will not even look at film if you don't meet their standards in this area. If you are over 6 feet and can run under a 4.5 40 you will get recruited and offered even if you never played a down of football in your life. I have seen many kids get combine and camp awards and offers that meet this criteria, but were dominated in the one on ones!

Reading between the lines of my experience, I get the sense that if a kid who did not meet this criteria was offered and ended up being a bust, the job security of the position coach involved would be in jeopardy.

I agree. If you 6'4 run a 4.6 F.B.S. is a sure thing

Great points! One thing I will add, if you make a HUDL highlight film let your high school coach view it before you send it. Many HS coaches know what college coaches are looking for on film. Plus, you don't want to send out film that hurts your chances. Highlights to a kid are not always the best to send to coaches.

I will agree with just about everything said so far. I will add that when making your h/l tape put your ABSOLUTE BEST PLAYS FIRST!! College coaches view 1000's of h/l tapes and you better give them a reason to continue watching when they do start to view it. Additonally, and most importantly, you better have good grades and a decent ACT/SAT scores or it won't make a difference how good you are, or think you are.

Grades ACT scores are big. I want to add you don't need your HS. Coach to do any of the work. Have him make the H/L then go to work. Some SK posters on BGP were saying their H/S coach wouldnt help in recruiting. IIt's not his job to find you a school.

Could NOT disagree with you more about your HS coach helping out. You are correct it's not his job to get your son a scholarship, but believe me College coaches are 100% more likely to listen to his high school's coaches opp. over yours any day, 100% FACT!!! his high school coach will be a HUGE help down the line.

It is not the high school coach's job to contact schools for the player but if the school contacts the coach then yes, they should give info. Now there are some high school coaches that have better relationships with some schools than other high school coaches and that can help.

Having a friend who does recruiting for HS players, believe me, if a parent, friend, brother, etc. would try and contact a coach about his or her son or daughter, 99 out of 100 times the college coach would never take that call. Your HS Coach can be a HUGE help, and yes, you both are right, it's not his or hers HS coaches job to find a sch. for the player, but again his or her HS coach sure can be a HUGE help in the process.
