How to get recruited for D-1 football

Featured Replies

Could NOT disagree with you more about your HS coach helping out. You are correct it's not his job to get your son a scholarship, but believe me College coaches are 100% more likely to listen to his high school's coaches opp. over yours any day, 100% FACT!!! his high school coach will be a HUGE help down the line.

This is the reason kids that could play d1 don't. Most NKY hS coaches know only a handful of D1 coaches. Why only have a few teams in the fold when you can have 100s. Do you think a d1 coach cares what your HS coach thinks? Kids get offers with out starting varsity football. Camps film speed size. That all D1 cares about. Stats your HS coach 2nd. If you sit back and let the HS coach do it all you better be a can miss stud.

Spoke to a D-1 head of recruiting recently.. his exact words to me were "If you feel like spending money on hotels and the registration fees for combines feel free to. Just keep in mind that College coaches and recruiters are NOT allowed to attend these and though we may get the "results" we take it with a grain of salt. Each combine uses a different method of timing 40's and such. Its funny they will be timed at 4.5 at the combine but when they show up to our camp, they can't seem to break 4.7. So sure you can try to get stars at combines but those stars don't mean anything to us unless we see you ourselves. And that means at our camps or film you send us. "

So keep this in mind parents who are spending lots on combines each year.. College recruiters dont value them. They are more for the "scouting sites" and hype.

That's why you should attend school camps. The coaches are there. I would only attend school camps with invites from the coaching staff.

Use your film to get invites to camps. Email the film link. Then attend camps with invites. Txt call email that coach let him know when you will be at their camp. If they like you. You will know!

Paraphrased - "We had a young man attend our camp last year. He was well over 300 pounds and we had never heard of him before. He came to our camp, hustled his A** off and competed! Went 100% every drill, every competition. During our "just play" portion of our camp, he stood out as someone that wanted to compete. After speaking with my coaches, we offered him! He wound up going to a different school, but because of his passion, hustle and desire to compete, we offered. This is what we want! Kids that want to compete! So, while you are out there, hustle everywhere. Sprint on and off and COMPETE! We are watching every move. You never know when what you do, makes a difference. Both positive/negative!"

Just sharing! Good Luck to ALL!

D1 looks for size or speed. It's easy for coache's to offer kids that fit the mold. even if there are better skilled numbers kids. Why? They look at what can be not what is. Can't teach height or speed. A kid can get stronger and bigger. A kid can't get taller. A fast kid can kid a bit faster. A slow kid will never be fast as the fast kid with all the traning in the world. It's what you were born with. God given.

And have a good physical frame. A 245 lb hustling lineman isn't getting an offer if he is under 6'2.

Absolutely. Not to say anyone under 6' 2", 245 can't play D1, but when it comes to camps and recruiting, they are looking for something that "catches their eye". Can't coach height or speed. But you also can't teach "HEART"! Undersized, not that fast, WORK YOUR REAR END off, prove yourself, turn some heads....NEVER KNOW!

Fitting the mold puts you in a good position to be recruited. This is why. We can look at the numbers of who gets offered. Around 1.5% of all HS seniors get a FBS FCS full ride. I bet that they are the kids in the 5% that have the chance to compete for the schorlships. Why they fit the mold the other 95% dosent. So you are really only competing with 5% of other HS seniors.
