Newport Catholic 61 Newport 57 (OT)

Final. Newport had it down to a one point game for most of the overtime and actually took the lead with 18 seconds. Bueter drove the lane and sank both with 13 seconds. Newport then launched a pass the length of the court and it ended up in NewCath's hands and they got fouled and that was it. Great game. Number 21 for Newport hit some CLUTCH shots and James Glenn was on fire. Guesenhues carried NCC today.

Wow. I called NCC in the 9th region picks, but I was thinking they would at least win in regulation, regardless of the earlier loss to NHS. Great season by the Wildcats, brought some attention to Newport. Hopefully the trend continues.

Bad pass at the end... I would have probably taken my chances with Llanes or Glenn end gettin end to end, but I can understand what they were trying to do. NCC had a couple chances to win in regulation at the basket and could have ended it there... hate to see a games final lead change come on a questionable call at the basket, but thats the way the ball bounces... Gesenhues hit some big threes for NCC... Congrats to NC on advancing and congrats to Newport on a good season...

Newport isn't having too much luck in the playoff overtimes this year.

NCC will make it to the region, maybe to the regional semifinals. They play 5 players and almost lost Bueter tonight. He had 4 fouls with about 3 minutes to go in regulation. If he fouls out I really can't see NCC breaking any kind of a press. Dietzl starts five players and sticks with them until the bitter end and will play a sub for possibly a minute or two in the game. NCC was tired. Great game though and congrats to NCC - moving on! :thumb:

Can someone give me the breakdown in how many free thows both teams shot/made?

NC shot 27 and Newport shot 7, approximately.

Doesnt surprise me it was that lopsided. But then again I wasnt at the game so I cant tell you if the refs were really that bad or not.

The refs were bad "at times." I thought they let a lot of things go that could have been fouls but they decided to let them play. The free throws were lopsided because Newport was fouling toward the end of regulation and at the end of overtime. NCC was also in the bonus with 4 minutes to go in the forth quater. The officiating was not that bad.

What officials are working the 9th this year?

Not true. I left with the score 42-42 and the free throws were already lopsided. NCC was in the bonus long before 4 minutes left in the fourth. I left with 5 minutes in the game and they were 1 foul away from the double bonus.

Newport didn't lose because of the officiating. IMO they lost because early on they had too many turnovers and were content to settle for long range jumpers against NCC's zone in the 1st half. This was when NCC built their lead.

However, with all that said the officiating was pitiful.

I agree on the refs. With that said there were 2 reasons you could have put a saddle on Bueter.

Newport rode him all nite and he carried NCC. NCC was only effective when the offense went thru him. With the double teams coming to him and Kiernan, he was effective in finding the open man with his no look passes.

NCC's going to struggle in the region playing only 5 players.

I hear the officiating was pitiful also. 27 Ft to 7 is unreal. I hear the first three fouls of the game were all on Newports James Thomas.
