Yep, sometimes that IS the answer, no matter how hard you don't want it to be.

I got a sweat shirt to wear beginning of school in the 7th grade. First cool day that fall, couldn't wait to pull it out and wear it. Had a cool saying on the front of it too. "I'm a Perfect 10". Took me EXACTLY 1 day to learn...Danny, DO NOT wear that sweat shirt to school again. Even though the sweat shirt was 100% accurate:thumb:...lesson learned. Sometimes things can be headed off at the pass, and it's just better to do it that way.

Couldn't disagree more.

You do you, and if people don't like or understand it, that's their problem. Never compromise who you are or what you like or believe because others don't understand it. I can't be the only person who believes that, can I?

We lived in Indy for 13 years. Colts gear was all my kids ever wore. When we first moved here my older kids would wear their Colts gear proudly and thought it was cool and could handle the jabs and kids making fun, etc. They could dish it right back.

My son that has some issues came home and said he did not want to wear Colts gear again because people said stuff. Now he is not able to communicate exactly what was said to him. But he knew he did not want to wear the stuff to school again, just around the family. Easy fix. We did not go outfit him with Bengals gear to conform, he just wore a different sweatshirt/cap.

There was zero chance that I was going to track down the kids, the teacher, the principle, and make an issue out of who was harassing my kid for wearing Colts gear.

Were kids bullying my older ones? Some would say yes. But it instead became an icebreaker trademark for the new kids in school.

My other son just knew he did not want to deal with the pressure so we changed it for him.

Couldn't disagree more.

So you expect a 3rd grader to understand all this stuff of how to act?

So right you are.

I actually agree with the school. No way the school can keep a kid from saying something to him at some point in time. best thing to do is get rid of what causes it. And apparently it was a backpack. I blame the mom for letting her BOY wear this, what did she expect. What is done at home isnt done in school. My son will play barbies at home with his sister at times(to make her happy) but in no way would he ever do that at school where his friends would see him

OK, my friend. Let's change this up.

Let's say that the school called Mom and said "the backpack your son has cannot be brought back because the picture of Jesus Christ is getting him picked on."

You saying "the best thing to do is get rid of what causes it?"

I don't see her standing up for her kid as much as her trying to make a point and being a drama mama.

I have 4 boys. As a parent you need to be in tune to the world and guide them so that they can step out into the day and have success.

It's a cold cruel world out there. One screaming mommy is not going to change that.

I have a 12 year old boy with special needs. If it weren't for me selecting his clothes and and guiding him each morning before I send him out the door, he would get chewed up and spit out at school.

It is what it is.

Overall, we disagree on this. I do not subscribe to the theory of teaching them how cruel the world is when they're in grade school.

Secondly, the school has completely failed in their responsibility to a)protect the child from bullying and b)their role in educating children on how to work with ALL types of humans.

If the backpack does not violate any rules then in no way should the answer be to ban it. You're saying "bullies win and we can't do anything to stop them."

I did not understand it to be that the backpack was banned. I understood that they suggested that the student not bring it anymore. I will reread it.

I just sat through a seminar on bullying. It comes in all types. One of them is exclusion. And it can be subtle exclusion that is a challenge for educators to control, but can be very painful for a child.

Say the teasing stops, but the other boys don't want to hang out with the boy with a "My Little Pony" backpack?

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with the bolded above. I think most everyone commenting here ALL agree that the school failed on that point. Some of us just think the mom could have handled this differently from the start.

So, to add to the discussion here, I do a survey in the office with people that have male children. Unscientific for sure, but still a survey. In short...your 9 yo son wants a my little pony backpack (they all knew what that is), wants you to buy it for him to use to carry books to school. What do you do? Answer? They all said no, that aint happening. Why? Cause they ALL knew what would happen when he showed up with it on his back. As I said before, head it off at the pass.

Let me ask you this BigV...at what age does My Little Pony become inappropriate for a boy? Out of the womb? Preschool? Or is it fine for kindergarten, but not for first grade? Is it good for 2nd grade, but 3rd grade is too late? What if it was Bob the Builder, Scooby Doo, or SpongeBob Squarepants? Does the cartoon character make a difference?

Oh, I don't know if there is a "right" or "wrong" answer to the above question. But I think we can agree on this. My Little Pony is marketed primarily to and for little girls. It is designed to primarily appeal to little girls. A 9 yo little boy brings a MLP backpack to school, guess what? He's probably gonna get teased about it. That teasing could cross the line into bullying...unless someone thinks teasing is also bullying, but that's another argument. Regardless, it's a battle that doesn't HAVE to be fought. A little forward thinking by the parent, and there is no battle.

Guys, life is full of battles. Part of navigating through life is picking the battles worth fighting, cause you can't fight them all, and if you try it's just gonna beat you down. Some have to learn that the hard way. What I'm saying is, having my 9 yo little boy wear a MLP backpack to school aint a battle I'm picking to fight if in that situation...in MOST circumstances.

To be fair my kid would be getting whatever back pack is on sale.

I just don't understand why some people can't see why not letting a 9 year old boy going to school wearing a girls cartoon may be in the best interest of the child. Kids are cruel we all went through it. Why deny it. If a kid is old enough and mature enough to handle reactions from immature people then more power to him. Kids who are cruel should be punished. But we all know its impossible to catch everything so why putt your child in that situation. Why can't the parent just tell the child "no". This all reminds me of that movie Big Daddy with Adam Sandler. As a someone stated above some battles in a social setting aren't worth fighting. And trying to stop 9 year old boys from mocking a boy classmate over wearing a girls back pack just isn't one of them I'm sorry.

Well first of all my son would probably be too young to realize why kids are picking on him for wearing a Jesus Christ backpack. He is still innocent of all of the true evil out there that the atheist and political correctness has created.

I would just get him another backpack and explain that the one he is using bothers other kids but that he must always have faith and believe in God regardless of what others think.

All kids are innocent until someone teaches them to hate on another child because he's wearing a MLP backpack.

I had a Charlie Angles back pack. Of course, I was uber cool and WAY ahead of my time.:)
