Powell County Coaching Position

Featured Replies

The Pirates will be looking for a new head coach for next season. Coach Hall was let go and it's rumored that he might be an assistant next season at Breathitt County on the girls side. Coach Hall was actually the head coach of the Breathitt Bobcats (Boys team) at one time.

Possible candidates (Just throwing these out there)

Micha Drake & Tim Cornett (both assistants for the Pirates)

Danny Wright (Former Lee County Coach)

Brian Britt (Former Mercer County Coach) (highly unlikely, would be tough for Powell since Bryan Station and couple bigger schools are open)

I'm positive that coaches at smaller schools (Jenkins, JBS, Jackson City, etc. etc.) will apply because it's a bigger job.

I'd say that some assistants might throw their name into the hat as well.

Powell County would be a good place to coach. Dave Fraley did well there back in the 1970's. Powell is the 3rd largest enrollment in the 14th Region, with more than a hundred students than what Knott or Breathitt has in their high schools. I believe the KHSAA website has them listed at 720 students behind only Letcher Central and Perry Central. So they've got the numbers, they just need someone to build their program from the elementary on up. That's what Fraley did and he turned Powell into a regional contender nearly every year he was there, winning the region in 1974.

I would assume there will be numerous applications for the job. They have great facilities ( gym seats 3,500), and great fan support. They are a regional power in baseball. No reason they can't be the same in basketball too.

Do you really think some of the smaller school coaches will apply?

Didn't Powell win 2 of the last 3 districts?

Yes. Also advanced to a region semi-final in one of those years, and gave Buckhorn fits in that semi-final

Yes. Powell is a bigger school than Jenkins, JBS, Jackson City

I honestly dont think any of those 3 school current coaches with apply. JMO. I know Powell is a bigger school with more athletes but I just dont see it. Danny Wright would make a good hire but I dont think he is ready to come back to the coaching rankings just yet.

Hall will not be the Asst. on the girls squad at Breathitt Co.

They may not but I think they will.

I have no plans to apply at Powell County. I will forever treasure the 3 seasons I spent there and wish them the best next season. The boys I started with will be seniors next season so I'll be pulling for them. I may apply there in the future if the situation was right but not this time. I have applied for a couple positions elsewhere. I would also be very interested in being an assistant under Coach Hall again if the opportunity presented itself, I think he is one of the most underrated coaches in KY. and learned a lot from him about basketball, Social Studies and how to treat people and run a quality high school program.

Tim Cornett

I wonder if Coach Britt will apply?

Brian Britt, from Mercer? If him, he might, but he's from Bowling Green and lives in Harrodsburg so a move further east might be a little too far.

If you're talking about another Coach Britt, then my apologies. I have no clue!

Yes I was referring to Brian Britt.

Heard from a guy pretty close to the situation, 4 applicants. A guy from West Virginia and one from Floyd County, Robert Hammonds at Letcher Central and Bobby Bowling all applied for the job. The guy from West Virginia and Floyd County are not finalists. Powell County maybe leaning towards Bobby Bowling from what I hear.

Give us some info on Bowling. Would love to see Hammonds get the job. Are you sure he applied?
