I see they had some nice big name jockeys in for the race.

I had Harry's Holiday WPS, that would have paid a lot better! I was at a poker game and a buddy was telling me he liked him since odds were so long. I played a few bucks on it online and had to watch race on a delay. So close!

I have been going to the Spiral Stakes for over 25 years. We always get the same seats on the fourth floor, and pay $35.00. There was no concession stand open, only two ladies taking bets, and I swear this had to be their first day. One of them sat in her chair most of the day and said "I am closed"

 

Finally, another group complained and they opened up a bar.

 

There used to be a time when all betting lines were open and the place was packed.

 

I don't understand why the owners do nothing to promote the event, and have done nothing to clean the place up in years. The windows were filthy and the place is falling apart. Maybe the casino bought the place with the intention of running it into the ground. Then all the gamblers will go to Ohio. I understand River downs is going to be quite nice.

They are not going to pump money into a facility when they do not have any to pump in. I was there for the first time a few Fridays ago and felt that the place was getting to be like it was before Jerry Carroll bought it. It is a shame to be quite honest, but is a reflection on horse racing as a whole IMO. Within the next few years you will probably have 25 or 30 tracks spread throughout the country and everything else will be shuttered.

VIP Tent is the only place to be on Spiral Day. Great party.

It really is a shame to see how it's deteriorated. TP was never a showplace but it had a nice run where it was a pretty decent place to go watch a few horse races each year in March and September. The Jim Beam Race was a nice prep race for the derby in the late 80's to early 90's.

Don't lock the doors on Turfway just yet - we are only a couple years removed from Animal Kingdom winning the Spiral and it is a popular track for bettors across the country (OTB, TVG, On-Line etc.). The facilities definitely needs some attention, specifically the restrooms, but there is still a market for a track like Turfway. The place has good crowds on the weekends and the OTB is always packed. I believe that it is inevitable that some form of expanded gambling will pass the narrow minded KY legislature eventually and if Turfway can limp along until then they will survive. On that note, the window is closing quickly.

It used to be a very nice event. It was promoted and very well attended. Every seat in the place was taken. Every betting window was open because of the heavy crowds. The place looked nice. Obviously it was not the Derby, but you had the feeling that you were at a special event.

 

In the last few years hardly anyone goes. Turfway is dirty and falling apart. Our seats are on the 4th floor. There was no concession stand open. Hundreds of seats empty. We had water dripping down from the ceiling. It has turned into a nasty place.

 

I love horse racing and I just hate to see how Turfway has been left to rot.

Couple buddies and I had full intention of going yesterday, until we saw the time of the UK vs. UC game and that ended those thoughts. Turfway really is a bit of a dump these days. It's a shame.

Bit of a dump is an understatement. It is almost as bad today as it was before Jerry Carroll took over way back when. He cleaned the place up and made some necessary and very nice improvements to the facility. It is a real shame to someone that likes to play the horses every so often. Hard to believe a state can have tracks like Keeneland and Churchill and then a dump like Turfway.

With the chance at casino action being slim I've always wondered why they don't just go ahead and develop the property. They're sitting on a gold mine in land.
