March 19, 201412 yr The Horseshoe Casino Spiral Stakes are at Turfway this Saturday -- who is going to be there? Always one of my favorite days of the year in Northern Ky! My son has two soccer games in the morning, noon-time, so we won't be arriving until about 2:00. If you're going to be there, I'd love to say, "hello".
March 19, 201412 yr Isn't it ironic that Horseshoe Casino is the new sponsor of the Spiral Stakes? Not sure if I will make it there or not. My brother will be there for sure. Big horse fan. We already reserved our box for the Oaks and we have done the Breeders cup several times.

I have to work this Saturday, my family has a table, so my better half will be bringing her friend. The weather should cooperate, bring home a winner MTGL!

Turfway Park is part of Caesar's, who also owns Horseshoe Casino, and beyond that, the guy who runs Turfway actually reports to Kevin Cline (who runs Horseshoe). With that info....not too ironic.

With that info....not too ironic. I knew Turfway was struggling, did not know they were sold to a casino. Horse racing industry in KY. has tried to prevent Casinos from coming to KY and so I guess Caesar's is hedging their bet. Who was it that bought the old Jillian's thinking they could bring a casino to NKY?
March 19, 201412 yr Harrah's had owned for a few years, but you are right when you say it's struggling. They gave Churchill the fall meet and are only racing 3 days a week now. Bob Elliston left to become COO of the Breeders Cup. It really needs a Racino attached to bring the purses back up.
March 19, 201412 yr They do a good job on Friday nights bringing in a band and offering Dollar beers. Gets some bodies into the building and they end up placing a few bets. but agree, need the big purses to make the real money.
March 19, 201412 yr Horse racing in Kentucky is at such a disadvantage with the Ohio and Indiana gaming laws. When is our state going to wake up.
March 19, 201412 yr The problem is that Churchill Downs and Keeneland make money hand over fist. Until they start losing money, no one in the legislature is going to believe that there is a problem. Within the next 5 years I am going to say that Turfway Park and Ellis Park will be no more. You will have no racing in Kentucky from January 1 through the end of March. Keeneland will then run their spring meet and fall meet with Churchill running all of the other dates. Racing at Belterra Park will improve, but it will take some time because the Ohio racing program is in worse shape than Kentucky.

I agree with your 5 year asessment, Turfway and Ellis are holding on by a thread. Keeneland makes their money through the sales. The Sheikh Maktoum's of the world keep pumping millions into yearling market, they will continue to thrive. Churchill has taken some lumps, they went to night racing on selected nights in the summer, it has been a success. Taking the fall dates from Turfway help stabalize them for now. The genie is out of the bottle, WV and Indinana are beating us down on the smaller tracks, Ohio is next in line. It is a declining sport, there needs a sense of urgency in Frankfort.

March 20, 201412 yr Battaglia's favorite. I won big bucks on We Miss Artie at Keeneland last year. That would be my pick here.
