NKY Preseason Coaches Poll

Featured Replies

Hellbird, I usually appreciate your candor and insight and I hope you do not take this the wrong way. Did you have a bad experience at BW or were wronged by someone there? It is one thing to have a difference of opinion but you seem bitter towards other opinions of your alma mater. BW did beat a lot of other strong teams in NKY and they lost to the same ones as well. BW folks should be flattered that a dinky school gets mentioned in the same breath as the big boys in the area. If BW was chicken to play anyone then why did they play in the Louisville Invitational? You have actually heard Coach Mullins say that they did not play Cooper because he was chicken? Hardly. BW had a fine year for a very young team. Losing Combs did not help the depth chart at all but for a small school they hung in there. They should be proud of the All "A" win. It is set up in a state tourney format and they beat some good teams. I do not remember NCC getting slighted last year for winning it.

No, not at all. I love everything Beechwood. I just don't like when others, no matter what team or school they root for, who try and belittle other teams accomplishments while touting their own school whether deserved or not. Bubba claimed they won the state championship this year which they didn't, he also talked down SK and their run they made.

Beechwood will be the Pre season #1 team next year and they should be with the talent returning, I will be pulling for them again next year also, but if they don't make it through regionals again I won't be putting down the other teams that make it through and go down state and still try and claim BW as the better team.

As far as NCC last year, I also don't remember their fans going on after being knocked out and belittle the teams that went further in state and claiming the All A as the end all and I also don't remember them canceling games because they played in the All A.

Id be saying the same about any school who has fans that belittle other schools for being more succesful etc. than their own team.

Yes he did. Game ended in 10 innings, he was not the pitcher of record.

Ganns didn't pitch against Cooper in the Doc Morris game. Johnson was the starting pitcher. A win is a win, but I wouldn't take much from that game. Rebels scored their runs early on a drop fly ball and several mistakes in the infield by Cooper and Cooper got their runs late by several mistakes by the Rebels. Not too many earned runs by either team. The field gets credit for that game. I think the district game and the district tourney game on real fields gave a more accurate showing of each team. Ganns started both district games and got a no decision on the first , with Purnell picking up the win and Ganns pitched a complete game in the tourney for the win.

Is baseball the toughest sport to judge preseason? Looking at the poll, 4 of the top 5 teams were close to where they might have finished if a vote were held after the season. Obviously Conner and SK were blatant misses but there were also teams in there that would not have made it after the season.

Relievers for the Doc Morris game was Geiske and Martin

Sorry, I was mistaken then, could have sworn Ganns pitched against Dunn in the first matchup as well. Not really sure why you would discount the Doc Morris game when comparing the 2 teams though. Yes they played at Meinken field but I don't recall any difference in the other games when compared to that one except for Cooper spotting Boone 3 unearned runs in the first on a bad call at home by the ump.

The other 2 games Boone scored on errors also so why discount the first game and say the other 2 were better indicators? The district game there were 3 runs by Boone scored on errors so should we say that doesn't count also? The 2nd game played when it was tied in the inning where the fans got out of hand the go ahead runs we're due to an error also. So not really sure how those 2 games are better indicators of the 2 teams. Do you say that only because Boone won those 2?

Not getting into it with Hellbird because we agree on this thread. One point of clarification, Beechwood also beat Cooper in 2013.

Yes they did. Actually Beechwood won 2 and Cooper won 1 last year against eachother.

Hellbird, I can't talk for Cooper, but I would say the several miss balls in the infield by Cooper was due to bad hops and the drop fly ball in CF had something to do with the swale he ran into. I do know enough about Boone to say the miss balls in the infield and LF was due to poor field conditions. There was more misplayed balls by the middle infielders that game than the rest of the season. I would say the field was the reason. For the first district game, it was a well pitch game by both starters until the incident at second and the uproar by the fans. After that Boone was able to get a few key hits and made the most of it. That game came down to the relievers. That game just needs to stay forgotten and move on. Both sides could have great arguments on thaqt one. On the District Tourney game, both teams scored unearned runs by passed balls at the plate. It was a 1-1 tie until Boone started the bottom of the 4th w/ 4 hits and a walk . That game was earned by great hits , no errors were involved. Also, Boone's middle infielders had no errors and had awesome highlight plays. Purnell had a nice diving catch at short and Teegarden went way in the hole, both to take away hits. That is the defense , Boone saw all year, not what was shown at Meinken. They should think about making that field a dump site. LOL

I agree about making that field a dump lol. My point is the district game there were 2 errors by the catcher that allowed Boone to score 3 runs. Boone got hits that inning but the inning continued die to error at the plate which allowed the first 2 runs that inning to score. Also you dismiss that same inning where the 2nd baseman booted a routine grounder that started also continued that inning which then led to Purnells big hit.

What I'm saying is their were errors in all 3 games that led to Boone runs so to discount 1 game and claim it was because of errors then you'd have to discount the other 2 also because Cooper had more errors in those others than they did in the first game.

I do not agree with the belittling either. We need to give credit where credit is due and the SK story was a good one because they were not in many discussions throughout the year as can be measured by the number of baseball related posts from UK#1fan. I think the "best team in NKY" made for interesting debate and there were several valid arguments. I personally enjoyed the All "A". I know the kids enjoyed it as well as the BW faithful that lined Beechwood Road to welcome the team back from Lexington. That too was a good story. And what about the dramatic come from behind win against Brossart in the All "A" regional. One of the most exciting games I have seen in a long time at any level. Those who know baseball will deem it as a championship in a state wide format with over 100 teams. Nothing more. That alone is a nice accomplishment and should never be diminished. No, it is not an official state title and the two should not be confused. My stable hand tells me the horse is dead and should not be beaten any further. Can't wait until next season. Hope it is as good as this one was.

Thank you Beech Bum. I do not care if SK won or lost, but the All "A" is something.

Hellbird, I think we are trying to make different points. In almost every game, there will be errors, but the game at Meinken, Rebels mistakes were extreme and they were errors you probable would not have seen if it was played at Cooper or Boone. I felt Cooper's mistakes at Meinken was also due to the poor field conditions. I think the game was decided on who got the most bad hops.

The other two games, pitching was great, hitting was low and it came down to which team made the least mistakes. IMO, Mistakes in the district games was on the players, not the field. No error by either team sticks in my mind as a bad hop, etc. Whoever watch all three games, would probable agree, Meinken was not a true defensive reading of Boone and I felt it was not a good reading of Cooper. I never discounted the win, just saying that field gave a poor reading that shouldn't be used to measure either team.

I do agree with you. It was a nice accomishment, but when some compare it to a state championship is where I have to step up and disagree.

That is my point. You come off as SK's accomishment doesn't come close to what Beechwood won this year.

You proved my point to a tee. Maybe it came off wrong when you made your posts but that is how they came off to me. You think All A was bigger when in reality it wasn't close. No tourney compares to state tournament where every single team is competing to make it especially when you are comparing it to a tourney that only allows the smallest schools in.

I like Hazard's accomplishments as well. Didn't they make it to the quarters of both the All "A" and the KHSAA state tourney?
