I saw a similar post on the boys side about Cov Cath violating KHSAA rules by "practicing" against better players to get ready for the post season. When I saw this article Fort Thomas Sports: Thoroughbreds edge Lady Indians, 54-52

about NCC's girls "practicing" against taller players (adult men) to prepare for their post season, I figured it was a violation of KHSAA rule Case BL-23-11 number 5 as well.

 

Thoughts? Does this apply to what NCC says they are doing in the article?

NDA just lost to NCC and if they used "taller players" to prepare for their win, I say more power to them! Far too many people spend too much time looking for things to point fingers at than just enjoying the sport they are fanatics about.

Drop the rule...it's silly. If you have a resource such as better, taller players to practice against, then by all means you should be able to use that resource.

 

I agree it's silly and would love to have my girl play against boys. But I think it's more about liability. What if some girl gets hurt while practicing against a male, especially if that male is not associated at all with the school. I think their hands are tied because of all the crazy lawsuits this country allows! Same on the boys side. If you bring in Men to practice against kids, you are setting yourself up for issues. 99.9% of the time nothing is going to happen and if there did, there would be not lawsuit. But the one time it did is not worth it to KHSAA. Then some poor little girls get's hurt and it gets blown up and everyone that says it's okay will be saying "why didn't the KHSAA have rules for that?"

Are you suggesting the coaches should try to cover it up when they are knowingly violating a rule? I think that might get them more of a punishment than losing a future scrimmage.

 

If the coaches know they're doing something that's a violation, then yes, it would behoove them to make sure the kids keep illegal scrimmages on the downlow. Otherwise it makes them look clueless about the rules when the kids spill the beans to the press.

 

Do you really think the KHSAA is going to hardcore investigate something like that — a cover-up of a relatively minor violation? Seems highly unlikely they would get anybody to admit anything, so it becomes a bunch of he-said, she-said stuff.

I don't look at it a pettiness or anyone trying to take down NCC or Cov Cath. It's more a discussion about the rules. For me, if it were legal, I'd have a certain ex-D1 pitcher pitching batting practice every day to my kids. But I can't. I'm not allowed. Many would say, "that's a great idea" and "everyone else does it". But I wouldn't. I too think it's a great idea and I too know that others do it. But I won't. Is that fair to my kids? It's just a scenario. Make it okay to do it or enforce it. The problem is because of lawsuits, they can't make it legal. Maybe that's why it's not strickly enforced. Because they don't really see anything wrong with it, but they have to have it there to protect them. Maybe they say "we look the other way, but if you get caught, you must pay the piper". It's only unfair because some abide by the rules and some don't. I would do it too if I was allowed.

You get two scrimmages, those are the rules. Bringing in outsiders to play against your kids is another scrimmage. Like it or not, it's a scrimmage.

 

And, it's a huge liability issue. I don't blame the KHSAA, or their insurance company, if they wouldn't want to pay for an injury that occurred when a 20+ year old man injures a HS kid. That's not what the insurance is there for.

 

Coaches that have been through background checks and training (paid or volunteer) that are playing against their team is one thing. Outsiders with no training or certification is another.

So it would be OK to have a practice squad of 20-30 year olds to go against your football team in practice everyday...25 year old man practicing against freshman football player

Just seems like if the OP had a problem they would report it to KHSAA and let it be handled that way. KHSAA reviews the situations, rules on it and maybe sets a new precedent.

Wouldn't have mattered the school affiliation, it was published elsewhere. Could have been Pikeville, Beechwood, Mayfield, Corbin, doesn't matter.
