Covington Catholic article shows possible KHSAA violation - Appears Unfounded

Featured Replies

Girls can practice against males. Just not male high school students. A few years ago the NCAA tried to ban the use of male practice players (in college they can be male students) and the top D1 Womens teams banned together to get that squashed.

I watched a NCAA Womens team practice at the Final Four one year and they used 5 male players who absolutely throttled their starting five in a 10 minute scrimmage. The Head Coach (a women) had the guys full court press and play man-to-women defense over every inch of the court and kept score. The guys were 6'1 to 6'4" maybe and looked like pretty good former high school players.

You sure about that one? In high school, according to KHSAA?

For what it's worth, the CCH teams have always played against college kids in the summer. To my knowledge, there has never been any college players competing at practices, but certainly during the summer pick-up games & open gyms.

As long as they aren't 'students' it is cool? Seems like the way it is written makes it a gray area.

Do other schools do that? Practice with college players or people who have played some college ball?

Like ColonelCrazy said, during summer open gyms this goes on at a few NKy schools. Come up to NewCath in the summer for their "open gyms', and it's a plethora of former NewCath stars and current college players from NKU, WKY, and across the Bluegrass.

Like Clyde said, much to do about nothing.....moving on.

It isn't summertime and Open Gyms aren't practices. Those are two different things. Does NCC use college players during the season?

I'm guessing this loophole will be closed by the KHSAA. While allowing college players or high school graduates to come back and practice against high school players may not be spelled out in the wording of the bylaws I think the intent is that they can't.

If this was legal I could see some football teams with full blown practice squads of past players. Allowing the the #1s to get more of a challenge in practice everyday.

Just to keep it clear CCH didn't do this. (Not saying that JumperDad said they did)

As I said before the only "former college players" that COULD have played are the coaches.

If that's the case then I would have liked to have seen the article make that more clear.

Lol, I would too  ! Unfortunately it seems that one of the teenager's words were taken out of complex and reported as fact. It happens, oh well! Not that big of deal to me!

If your coach is male he can run the point guard ragged up and down the floor. If your coach is female and her assistant is 6'5" can block the centers shot 10 times in a row.

No, but neither did CovCath.....ALL CovCath coaches are former college players, so this is a BIG NONE ISSUE.

You know that's not remotely what I'm talking about.

Title IX requires that we include this quote from an NCC Girls player:

“We go against each other in practice,” Mayes said. “We will bring in taller people to go against in practice. Coach Stoll has friends who play basketball who are tall. He’ll ask them to come in and we’ll practice against them. That gets us prepared mentally.”

NCAA Rules have no bearing on HS, what does this have to do with HS Girls practicing against males.

Nothing other than the NCAA tried to ban practice against males and the top Women's teams would not stand for it.

OK I thought you were saying it was OK since NCAA allowed it
