Might have been a good idea to read KHSAA bylaw 14.2 before doing this article.

Bylaw 14

 

Sec.2) Practice of ineligible students.

Unless ineligible due to provisions in bylaw 15 (Sportsmanship, having been ejected from a contest), any student who is not eligible for competition during a teams next contest/meet/match/game shall not practice with the team

Sounds like they're fine.

 

From the article, they didn't practice with "ineligible students".

This doesn't seem like it jibes too well with that bylaw:

In practices leading up to the Ninth Region Tournament, the Covington Catholic High School basketball team sparred on the court with several coaches and volunteers who played college ball, mostly guys who were post players.

This looks like the part that precedes Section 2 that is incriminating

Sec. 1) GRADUATES AND COLLEGE STUDENTS

Any student who has graduated from a secondary school, or who

has ever played on a college team, is thereafter ineligible to play

on a high school team.

I'm sure he meant that having college players on the staff showing them how to play and working with them in practice is all that it is. Almost all schools have a former college player on staff that works with players in practice. I don't see much to it. JMO.

"To play" being the key there IMO. They aren't playing on a high school team. They were practicing against them.

Not sure what you're intrepreting from the story that in any way indicates a violation of the rules and bylaws you've referenced.

As long as they aren't 'students' it is cool? Seems like the way it is written makes it a gray area.

 

 

Do other schools do that? Practice with college players or people who have played some college ball?

Again, that's talking about students. These weren't students.

Much ado about nothing. The cited rules deal with high school students who are deemed to be ineligible.

This is all very strange that this arose at all and I don't see a problem, so I'll lay out my thinking.

 

Bylaws 14.1 and 14.2 both explicitly refer to "students" as the group to which those provisions apply. None of the people brought in to help with practice was a "student".

That rule also says that boys can't practice against the Girl's team. Really? That isn't allowed?
