An Overview of BG from 2013 to 2014

BG comes off it's greatest (by accomplishments) 3 seasons in the history of the school with 3 undefeated consecutive 5A Championships. That speaks for itself. The heart and soul of those teams graduate this May/June (maybe with a basketball title too - OK I'm probably asking too much, but they'll likely be in the final 4 for sure).

Naracius Fant - Mr. Football, Devin Hayes QB, Blue Tisdale RB, Lincoln Quick (started every game but 2 his Frosh year at Middle LB), and Blake Pillow (made it impossible to just be concerned with Fant and Tisdale on offense) can not be replaced as a unit.

The offense loses 8 starters. The defense loses 8 starters.

With that doom and gloom, the 2014 offensive squad has 2 OL starters and 1 WR back. The 2 deep depth chart from last year will allow for BG to move last years second string guys into a starting position. The OL will be solid as usual. The WR and TE position are good possession receivers but none have the saavy or breakaway speed as the graduated group listed above. The RB position will be really good. Holt (power) and Corruthers (speed) will form a very good duo in the backfield. The X factor for the whole team is QB. Campbell Gott will be a senior and was Hayes backup and will certainly benefit from going through the motions of practice and seeing how Hayes handled things, BUT continuing with a spread-type offense (unless mandated by being down many points) will not be wise IMO. I don't see C Gott winning games for BG in the same fashion D Hayes did, but he could lose them if not disciplined as a senior should be. He will have to be able to throw average passes successfully and timely. If he can do that, BG will be in good shape, offensively.

The defensive unit returns 3 DLineman and 2 2-deep players from last year and will be the overall strength of the team. That's good. What's bad is ALL LB and secondary starters will graduate. In the secondary, all 2nd string 2-deep players return and those guys played quite a bit last year, so I think BG is good there. The question mark on defense is at LB, where Lincoln Quick's absence will be felt. Only 2 out of 4 of the 2nd string 2-deep players return. BG will be tested here. Many teams will try to dink and dunk around the Dline and test the LBs and secondary.

BG's schedule will be challenging. St X, Lex Cath, McCallie, Warren Central, Pulaski Co to name 5 can all beat BG this season, but BG could win these games as well. It will be very interesting to see how they come out next season.

Go BG!

If they get to 51 consecutive wins they will have earned it.

PP92 how many do they need to reach 51?

I believe 7. The Logan County game would be 51 consecutive wins.

I was kind of hoping that the X game would be the game to determine if they beat the streak or not. As near as I can see they have only 3 potential obstacles to beating 50 in a row: LexCath, X and McCallie. If they make it through that stretch unbeaten they beat the streak and then some. The remaining games on the schedule don't look that worrisome from there.

I'd include the Owensboro game as well. That will not be an easy victory to get IMO.

Rooting for them to pull it off. I imagine they managed to get underclassmen a lot of playing time last year, what do they have coming in on the skill positions they lost?

Purples better get another championship season cause the following year will be tough. FT Highlands and Cov Cath will be busting through that 5A door like gangbusters.....

I think this Purples team will suffer a couple losses this year. With players like Fant, Hayes, Tisdale, Pillow, to go along with much of their defense; it will be very tough for them to be the team they have been the last three seasons.

But it's still BG, they're going to be good and the expectation will be to win every game all the way until December.

Have they wraped up Spring Practice yet?
