Calipari not subbing tired players?

Featured Replies

Does anyone else think this is ridiculous as I do?

No. A lot of coaches do that. They tell their players to go at 100% for as long as they can until they are tired or need a breather.

Calipari did not say he would not sub tired players did he? Didn't he just say his players need to learn how to ask out when they do get tired?

He said HE doesn't do it and now assistant coaches are assigned to particular players.

There are only 5 guys out there. What is he looking at? Subbing out tired players would seem to be a part of the job description. Telling players to tap themselves out would seem to be a fail safe way in case the coach doesn't notice, not plan A and the only plan.

It has been my experience that the assistant coaches are typically in charge of watching for winded players and/or trying to keep the substitution pattern consistent. The Head Coach is too busy with X's & O's, barking instructions, getting after the officials. Not a surprise to me at all that his assistants focus on subbing.

That would be a great explanation except the next game against Florida will be the FIRST game that the coaches are going to sub players out. Also I have been watching college basketball since 1984 and I haven't seen assistants sending people into games.

I don't think Hood and Polson were tired when he took them out sr nite. He couldn't wait to get them out to get his 5 star players in. Hood is the best shooter on the UK team but not much of a chance to play.

Did you ever play basketball? Every level High School on up most head coaches depend on the assistants to help with substitutions. We aren't saying Head Coaches don't sub ever but for the most part that part of the game plan is on the assistants.

I'd be willing to bet that if you went to a freshman game that I coached as an assistant for the past two years, you wouldn't have seen me sub a player in but it happened with 90% of our substitutions probably.

Hood is the best shooter on the team? Interesting.

Career Three Point Percentage at UK:

Andrew Harrison = 36.1%

Alex Poythress = 35.7%

James Young = 32.8%

Jarrod Polson = 31.1%

Aaron Harrison = 30.6%

Jon Hood = 29%

And before we get into, anything about playing time affecting how good you shoot. The majority of the others shots (at least Young, Twins, Poythress, and a good chunk of Polson's) probably came during the heat of the game when the defense was at its best. Hood's a lot of those shots were in garbage time.

Also before we discuss how much more the others shoot them, meaning they'll have a better feel in the game:

An Harrison = 72 attempts

Poythress = 56 attempts

Hood = 55 attempts

Polson = 45 attempts

......

This isn't new stuff. Dean Smith long had the policy that you play your tail off, and when you need a breather you hold up a fist. He also had the rule that if you take yourself out with the fist, you have a say in when you go back in. If I have to take you out, I decide when you go back.

Nothing to see here.

Some of the players sub themselves out. Haven't you seen some of the players as they are running down the floor, look at the bench and raise their arm? They are asking for a break! The problem is when there is a player that thinks he can play the entire 40 minutes. In doing this, they will take "time off" and rest which is usually on defense. Cal wants them to go as hard as they can 110 per cent of the time when they are in the game , raise their arm for a breather, and then get back in the game.

Are you guys just ignoring the fact that Calipari is stating that his policy is changing as of tomorrow. All of the "its normal" B.S. won't be normal till tomorrow.

The answer to my original question, then is no nobody cares. On top of that how dare you question the mighty ways of the blue nation, we don't care if you are an alumni with some common sense. I've only been watching U.K. basketball for 30 years, my bad.
