I recall an Enquirer interview with Ron Dawn when he took over the NCC girls team and he said one of the biggest adjustments he had to make was how girls, after the game was over, were able to put it behind them - win or lose. He said after a tough loss, the boys would be crying their eyes out on the bus, but the girls - you couldn't tell from the bus ride home whether they had won or lost, because they were always the same. The girls played hard, they cared, and they wanted to win - but as soon as the game ended, win or lose, they let it go.

I think we have seen all year in NKY that there is no consistency in Girls basketball this season from the start. So this just seems to fit in with the rest of the year and I would not over-analyze it to try and determine why.

A few observations.

First it pains me to see anyone openly critical of Josh Feldmann. The man pours his heart and soul into our kids and this basketball program. He teaches a full day in Fort Thomas, takes the second practice slot (4:45pm-6:45pm) in Alexandria and doesn't get home to see his wife and toddler in Erlanger until 7:30pm, and that is only on nights when he is not out scouting. He is extremely knowledgable of the game and does a great job of teaching it. Just listen to some of the old broadcast replays when Josh would sit with Andrew Kappas during the playing of the JV games and provide commentary. Josh brings 16 (or more) years of basketball coaching with him to Brossart to coach our girls program. He is in his fourth year with us and is light years ahead of the coaching debacles that preceeded him. We are extremely fortunate to have him.

 

The reference to all of this "talent." We have indeed been fortunate to have had the services of this senior class who have formed the nucleus of this program all four years. But upon closer inspection we discover that maybe we aren't as physically overwhelming as folks might think and might look more appropriate in a prom gowns than basketball uniforms. I stand 6 foot tall, and am taller than Sarah Futscher who is of slight build. Stinky and Smelly, (Abby Stadtmiller and Morgan Verst) are petite in comparison to many of their counterparts. Kayla Young is an excellent defensive player and catlyst, but not a major threat to score. Madison Eisenman has been plagued with injury throughout her career, and is simply not the same player that she was during her freshmen season. Granted we have a nice sophomore support corps, who contributed substantially to our 22-7 record and will keep our winning tradition alive. When things got physical, we struggled. When we failed to hit shots from the perimeter we struggled. When we played superior opponents we struggled. Our three consecutive losses to Highlands, Simon Kenton, and Holy Cross should have told us that, while we were good, we were not up to defeating the blue-chippers night in and night out at this stage of their careers and perhaps were a second-tier contender, whether we liked it or not.

 

Things don't always go as hoped for, as this one didn't. It was a tough game to go out on, becuase we feel that we were capable of better and dared dream dreams of greatness, however reality intervened. Take a trip back in time to a boys regional game in 2009 at the BOKC where we played and felt we had a legitimate shot at Mason County. At halftime it was 33-6 with us on the short end of the stick. God forbid we should bring up our loss to Bracken County in the 2004 District Tournament. My point here is that stuff happens, and it did last night for our girls. Disappointing yes. Cause for disparaging our coach, no.

 

Hindsight is always 20/20, and if given the chance Coach Feldmann and his staff would have probably done a few things differently. However, you play the 32 minutes you are alloted and hope for the best.

 

To our parents who are so bold as to post derogatory statments about Coach Feldmann and his staff, I'm going to leave you with the immortal words of Colonel Nathan Jessup in A Few Good Men:

You want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Spot on Mustang, very well said. Josh is a class act and very knowledgeable of the game and most importantly loves the kids he coaches. I have spent many hours talking with Josh and its always a nice feeling to walk away knowing from the conversation that he loves his job, loves the opportunity to coach his kids, and ultimately loves the kids. In the end, that is all you can ask for and is most important to our youth. Leave a lasting impact on the players. Brossart has a great leader in Josh Feldman. A GOOD coach will coach his players up on the floor, a GREAT coach will coach his players not only on the floor about basketball but off the floor about LIFE! Josh Feldman exemplifies both!

Shame on those that get on here and publicly trash him!

Also as I have read through all of these post, mostly critical of Coach Feldman, the one thing that puzzles me is there is no mention or credit given to the Mason County Lady Royals. Do you think that maybe lock down defense caused the Lady Stangs to not be on top of the game? When you hold Brossart to 27 points, my friends you have done something! When you hold the region player of the year to only 8 points, my friends you have done something. When you play this type of defense that I seen the Lady Royals play, you tend to take away all the strengths that your opponent tends to have. I read about some of the posters on here talking about Feldman not making adjustments, there was really nothing that he could have done differently. The key to that ballgame was Mason County knocked down shots early and relaxed the team and enabled them to set their press. Brossart couldn't find the basket in the first quarter and that caused them to rush things, not relax and before they knew it it was something like 12-2 after the 1st quarter. Same thing happen to the Lady Royals last week in the district finals to Bracken, they couldn't throw it in the ocean in the first quarter, hence they weren't able to relax. Bracken meanwhile shoots lights out, something like 60 plus % in the first half.

 

Give the Lady Royals some love, they locked down on Brossart and played the best defense I have seen them play all season. Instead of knocking down your head coach Brossart faithful, realize the better team on this night won the game Wednesday night. Congrats to Mason County and good luck Saturday! Congrats to Brossart on a great season, a great run, and best of luck to those graduating seniors in their future endeavors!

I'm sure that's not the case in either circumstance.

Agree with Mustang and Elbow J- and to Big sale, no one should have to listen to input from parents. Love your kid, Feldman will coach them!

I don't think there's an AD anywhere that would refuse a constructive face to face meeting to address legit concerns. I wouldn't classify post-loss BGP gripes as constructive input.

If they are a good AD, they would suggest that you refer to your parent/player contract that I am sure all head coaches make a family sign and return that states specifics of what will/can be discussed versus what won't be. That probably should cover and cut and dry meeting with your AD should one be granted by he/she.

Wouldn't you agree that most request for constructive face to face meetings are generated from the inital thought of reconstructive surgery! :wacky: After any type of disagreement/altercation, there should be a "cool down" period of 24 hours or more before anyone has a meeting. BuzzerBeater touched on the parent/player contract.....follow the guidelines as stated and if anybody violates it, then have the meeting.

As someone who is just a casual fan/observer of 10th region boys and girls basketball, the thing that seems odd about this outcry against Coach Feldman, is that I don't recall reading or hearing any negative comments prior to this most recent loss. Did those who are unhappy, think that it was a foregone conclusion that the Lady Mustangs should beat the Lady Royals, hands down. I must admit, I would have preferred Brossart win this game, but Mason is a very talented, solid ball club, that is also very deep. Definitely no shame in a loss to them on their home floor, after Mason having suffered a loss in their district championship to Bracken Co.

I have heard Coach Feldman referred to as a top tier coach in the 10th region and knowing nothing more than watching his teams play, I concur.

In all honesty, Coach Feldman has not won when it really counted. He got beat in the All 'A' Regional his first year by a much weaker St. Patrick team and then preceded to lose big time to NCC the next two years in the All 'A' State tournament and then lost to a much smaller and less talented team in Danville this year in the All 'A'.

 

I'm not sure where that remark about St Patrick comes from but the st pat team I remember beating BB in the 2011 All A was not a team I would classify as a "weaker" team. They went on to play NCC in the first round of the All A State and only lost by 7 points. They played within a few points throughout the game. BB, on the other hand lost to NCC a couple of weeks prior, losing by 19. I wonder why someone would take a shot at a team that played their heart out and had plenty of talent (mostly juniors). On Jan 15, 2011, on that night, the better/stronger team definitely won (SP) and by a fairly wide margin. I think you owe that 2010-2011 St Pat team an apology. Those girls brought their "A" game when it mattered, and that is something only the girls can do. The coach can't control that. The same applies to a team that has a bad night. The coach can't make the baskets for them. Leave the coach alone.
