March 1, 201412 yr Author That's just dumb. Price already knows what Simon is capable of. He's been the long man out of the pen for the past couple of years. Having him start the opener of the Spring isn't going to tell Price anything. If a starting pitcher gets injured during the season Simon could fill in a start or to, but if he's not stretched out 4 innings is the max they would probably get out of him. I would not think of it as a "try-out" to be a starting pitcher. I think Price wanted him to get the experience of warming up before a game and then facing the top of the line-up right out of the gate. That way if someone in the rotation has a sore back and can't go then Simon would have experienced starting a game which can be different than coming into a 7-1 game in the third inning.
March 1, 201412 yr So far no guesses for the obvious choice. Mario Soto? Sorry. Couldn't resist. In all honesty, I'd give it awhile and use it as a carrot to make sure Cueto is doing everything he needs to in order to get back to form. If he responds, then you've got a tough decision if Latos continues doing what he did last year. But, that'd be a great problem to have.
