“On Friday, Feb. 21 an unsporting act took place in a boys’ basketball game between Cordia and Perry County Central. The officials assigned to the game ejected one student-athlete from Cordia who was directly involved in the incident and two student-athletes from Perry County Central for leaving the bench area. While video of the incident is available online, KHSAA Board of Control Policies state that the KHSAA staff is limited in the manner in which the video is used during the disciplinary process, unless the contest officials make a request for review of the specific incident. In this instance, the contest officials made no such request and therefore the KHSAA is not permitted to act upon video evidence, and must abide by the minimum required penalty of a two-game suspension for the Cordia player and a one-game suspension for each player from Perry County Central. Administration from Cordia has reported to the KHSAA that additional actions will be taken at the school level, as they do not condone the actions of the young man in question.”

I believe that is referring to the stripes. They may not be opposed to the KHSAA viewing the video but if they feel they saw everything that happened, I don't think they would feel the need to request that the KHSAA review it.

It kind of begs some questions that they wouldn't, especially in a region prone to complaints about biases/homerism. Some might wonder whether a lot more might have needed to be ejected/suspended.

Sure did. I remember it well. They won the region something like 3 straight years after old Knott County High, Hindman, and Carr Creek consolidated. Hindman had a young man by the name of Herbie Stamper and he could flat out play. He went on to star at Morehead State.

Carr Creek and Hindman had both won state championships, Hindman in the 1940's and Carr Creek in 1956.

 

Was Herbie related to Larry Stamper that played at UK in very early 70's?

I'm fairly sure they weren't related. Larry played for Lee County. His '68 Bobcat team made it to the Sweet 16 semifinals before losing to Seneca in overtime.

I'm not positive but I think Herbie had a brother or cousin that was also a good player. I believe he played in the early '80's, about the same time Knott's present coach, BB King played.

About what you would figure a school with an enrollment of slightly over 100 students would accomplish on the ball court, not a whole lot. They rarely made it to the region but would occasionally get a good draw and qualify. For years they were in the same region with Knott, Breathitt, Jackson City, and Riverside Christian, so if they got lucky in the blind draw they could make it out of district. But the first round game was usually one and done for them.

Knott Central opened for the 1974-75 school year consolidated from Hindman, Carr Creek and Knott County High. Cordia was originally set to be part of KCC but busing issues and roads made it difficult to get kids to Hindman. KCC opened about 6-7 years before the 4 lane highway KY from hazard to Prestonsburg opened or it would have alleviated the busing issue.

 

Herbie Stamper was best player KCC has produced, IMO, until Justice. He played at Morehead and was their all time leading scorer when he graduated. He had 2 younger brothers, Joe and David Jeff, who followed him to Morehead. David only played one year and transferred to Alice Lloyd College. He is the father of Stuart Stamper who led KCC to back to back regional champs in 09 and 10. They are not relate to Larry Stamper who played for the Cats.

You say Herbie Stamper was the best player Knott Central has produced "until Justice". I remember Herbie, and I don't think his game takes a back seat to Justice's. He was extremely good, one of the best the mountains has produced. He was a star player for Morehead State. Justice is good but I think your comparison between the two players is debatable.

However, don't take my comments the wrong way. Cam Justice is a very talented player. I love to watch him in action. He's one if the best mountain players I've seen in many years.

 

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Herbie play a couple of years for Hindman before the consolidation? His high school records for KCC would not be comparable to Cam's if that is true. Part of his stats/records would be for old Hindman High and the other part for Knott County Central.

That's pretty impressive. Most people don't realize how set some of the foreign players are. Housing and cars provided, salary above what most people make, and live tax free. Of course, there are exceptions to that and some countries/teams have had disgruntled players who claim they were owed $ as well.
