The game features the first recorded double play and the first known switch hitter, Brooklyn's Bob Ferguson. 1876 Philadelphia Athletic George Hall becomes first major league player to hit for cycle. The Englishman will also become the first player to be banned along with others for throwing 3 1/2 game lead with 12 games to go 1877. 1933 Joe McCarthy and Lou Gehrig are both thrown out of the game with the Yankee manager being suspended for three games. Fortunately his first baseman isn't and the 'Iron Horse's' consecutive game streak stays intact at 1,249 games. 1952 In a 3-1 loss, Boston Braves southpaw Warren Spahn whiffs 18 Cubs in 15 innings tying Jim Whitney's National League record of 18 strikeouts. On the same day, Braves scout Dewey Griggs signs a Mobile, Alabama youth named Henry Aaron. 1965 At Crosley Field, Jim Maloney no-hits the Mets for ten innings but loses the game, 1-0. The Reds right-hander loses his place in history thanks to an eleventh inning home run hit by New York outfielder Johnny Lewis.

The Giant catcher is able to circle the bases because the ball gets stuck behind the Eddie Grant memorial and Pirates’ center fielder Vince DiMaggio cannot free it in time. 1964 In a six player deal, the Cubs trade Lou Brock (will stay with team for fifteen years amassing 3,023 career hits) to Cardinals for Ernie Brogilo (will last two and half seasons with 7-19 record for Chicago).
June 15, 200620 yr I believe Jack Billingham finished his career with the Detroit Tigers. I think he knew the manager there pretty well. I got to meet Billingham who was pitching coach for our then Martinsville Astros club. He was one of the most sarcastic and funny people I've met. :thumb: Gruff, but nice enough to reminisce about the Red Machine.
