1963: Milwaukee Braves pitcher Bob Shaw set a Major League record of 5 balks in one game.

May 4th 1969, you Reds fans are going to like this:

Cloninger,knocked out in first inning of previous day's game,came back to pitch two-hitter as Reds walloped Padres,12-0,to complete sweep of double-header following 3-2 victory in first game.

1st game: Padres,two runs on seven hits no errors.one homer.Reds, three runs on seven hits one error,no homers.

2nd game: Padres,no runs on two hits,two errors.Reds 12 runs on 11 hits,no errors,two homers,one of the homers was hit by the pitcher who pitch the two-hitter.Tony Perez had the other homer.

May 7th 1969:

Carroll retired last five batters in relief of Merritt to complete Reds' 3-0 victory over Mets. Reds 3 runs on 5 hits one error one homer by Perez. Mets no runs on 3 hits two errors.

1878 Providence Gray outfielder Paul Hines becomes the first player to execute an unassisted triple play after making a shoestring catch in left center field and stepping on third retiring both runners who had passed the base. The runners were out due to rules used at the time.

 

1961 The New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc. announces the New York National League franchise's team nickname will be the Mets.

 

1966 Orioles' outfielder Frank Robinson hits the first ball ever completely out of Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. The 541-foot shot which lands on the other side of the over the left-field wall, comes off Indian hurler Luis Tiant.

 

1968 In front of only 6,298 Oakland fans, Jim "Catfish" Hunter hurls the first American League perfect game in forty-six years as the A's defeat the usually heavy hitting Twins, 4-0.

 

1973 Cardinals' pitcher Bob Gibson sets a major league mark as he starts his 242nd straight game. St. Louis is defeated by the Giants, 9-7.

 

1984 The first eight-hour major league game comes to an end when Harold Baines homers with one out in the 25th inning giving the White Sox a 7-6 victory over the Brewers. The game had started the night before but was suspended in the 17th because of a curfew.

 

1998 Cardinal Mark McGwire reaches the 400th career home run mark. Big Red's historic milestone comes in 4,727 at-bats (127 less at-bats than Babe Ruth) which is the least plate appearances ever needed to reach the mark.

May 9th,1973:

Johnny Bench of the Reds hit three home runs in a game for the second time in his career,all off Philadelphia's Steve Carlton in a 9-7 victory. Bench drove in seven runs.

Diamond Jim Gentile becomes the first player to hit grand-slam homers in consecutive innings, leading the Orioles to a 13-5 rout of the Twins at the Met in Bloominton.

1967 Braves' outfielder Hank Aaron hits an inside-the-park homer off Phillie hurler Jim Bunning. It will be 'Hammerin' Hank's' only home run which doesn't clear the fence out of his record setting 755 round-trippers.

 

1970 Braves' Hoyt Wilhelm becomes the first major league pitcher to appear in 1000 games.

 

1981 Expos' hurler Charlie Lea no-hits the Giants, 4-0, becoming the first French-born pitcher to accomplish the feat.

 

1999 In a 12-4 rout of the Mariners, Boston's shortstop Nomar Garciaparra hits two grand slams as well as a two-run homer becoming the first American League player to drive in 10 runs in a game since 1975.

1920 Beating the Tigers in relief at Griffith Stadium 9-8, 32-year old Senator right-hander Walter Johnson wins his 300th major league game. Although the 'Big Train, hurled for mostly losing teams during his 21-year career he will compile 417 victories including winning 20-games or more for ten consecutive seasons (1910-1919).

 

1967 Mickey Mantle's 500th career home run off of Stu Miller helps the Yankees defeat the Orioles, 6-5. The 'Commerce Comet' is the sixth big leaguer to reach this plateau.

 

1972 After 21 seasons with Giants in New York and San Francisco, 41-year old Willie Mays makes a dramatic debut for his new team as he hits a game winning home run off his former team giving the Mets a 5-4 victory. The 'Say Hey Kid's' 647th career homer in the fifth breaks a 4-4 deadlock.

 

1977 The first no-hitter is thrown by a Royals pitcher at Royals Stadium as Jim Colborn beats the Rangers, 6-0.

 

1986 Cardinals' utility man Jose Oquendo becomes the first non-pitcher to get a major league decision losing to the Braves in nineteen innings, 7-5.

1918 In an 18-inning game, Senators' legend Walter Johnson defeats Lefty Williams, who also pitches the entire game, and the White Sox, 1-0.

 

1941 Yankee outfielder Joe DiMaggio begins his 56-game hitting streak.

 

1959 The 100th anniversary of the first intercollegiate baseball game played is celebrated as the original contest between Amherst & Williams is reenacted.

 

1973 Angel fireballer Nolan Ryan no-hits the Royals, 3-0. It is the first of a record seven no-hitters the 'Ryan Express' throw during his career including another one in two months.

 

1981 At Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, Indians' Len Barker pitches a perfect game defeating the Blue Jays, 3-0. It is the 11th time in major league history the feat has been accomplished, and the first time in 13 years since its been done (Catfish Hunter -1968).

 

1991 The Red Sox and White Sox play contest which lasts 4 hours and 11 minutes setting a new record for slowest game ever played in nine innings.

 

2005 For the first time this season, the White Sox did not have lead in a game as they are beaten by the Orioles, 6-2. The streak of being ahead in 37 straight games establishes a major league record from the beginning of a season and ties the 1934 Yankees and the 1942 Cardinals for the third longest span in major league history.

1918 In an 18-inning game, Senators' legend Walter Johnson defeats Lefty Williams, who also pitches the entire game, and the White Sox, 1-0.

 

So both pitchers went the entire 18 innings? Amazing.
